\nMetonymy is a figure by which one name or noun is used instead of another,
\nto which it stands in a certain relation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nThe change is in the noun, and only in a verb
\nas connected with the action proceeding from it.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nThe names of persons are put by\u00a0Metonymy<\/i>
\nfor something which stands in a special relation to them.
\nThus we speak of \u201ca stanhope\u201d (carriage), from the Hon. Mr. Stanhope;
\n\u201ca brougham,\u201d from Lord Brougham;
\n\u201cboycotting,\u201d from Capt. Boycott;
\na \u201cblanket,\u2019\u201d \u201cnegus,\u201d a \u201cspencer,\u201d a \u201cd\u2019oyley,\u201d\u00a0etc<\/i>.,
\nfrom the respective inventors.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nThus it will be seen that\u00a0Metonymy\u00a0is not founded on resemblance,
\nbut on\u00a0relation<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nWhen we say that a person writes \u201ca bad hand,\u201d we do not mean a hand,
\nbut we use the noun \u201chand\u201d for the characters which it writes.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nMetonymy<\/i>\u00a0is of four kinds:\u00a0viz<\/i>.,
\nof the\u00a0Cause<\/i><\/a>,
\nof the\u00a0Effect<\/i><\/a>,
\nof the\u00a0Subject<\/i>,
\nand of the\u00a0Adjunct<\/i><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nI. Metonymy of the Cause<\/b><\/i><\/a>\u00a0is when the cause is put for the effect:
\ni.e<\/i>., when the doer is put for the thing done; or, the instrument for that which is effected; or, where the action is put for the effect produced by the action.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nII.\u00a0 \u00a0Metonymy of the\u00a0Effect<\/b><\/i><\/a>\u00a0is the opposite of the above:
\nwhen the effect is put for the cause.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nIII. Metonymy of the\u00a0Subject<\/b><\/i>\u00a0is when the subject is put for something
\npertaining to it: as the possessor for the possessed; the thing signified for the sign.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nIV. Metonymy of the\u00a0Adjunct<\/b><\/i><\/a>, on the contrary, is when
\nthat which pertains to anything is put for the thing itself.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nSome grammarians have added a fifth Metonymy, where the antecedent is put
\nfor the consequent; but it really belongs to Metonymy of the Cause.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The third division of Metonymy<\/i> is when the subject is put for the adjunct:
\ni.e<\/i>., for some circumstance pertaining to (or joined to) the subject:
\ne.g<\/i>., as when the place, or thing containing<\/i> it, is put for that which is contained:
\nthe possessor<\/i> for the thing possessed, etc<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nIt is divided into the five following heads : \u2014
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nThey knew this fact before: but they did not know all that was connected with it.
\nTheir nakedness, after the fall, received a new meaning.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nHere heart is put for \u201cunderstanding,\u201d as in A.V.;
\nbecause it is spoken of as the seat of wisdom and understanding.

\nProv. 26:7<\/a> \u201cThe legs of the lame are not equal: so is a parable in the mouth of fools.\u201d So A.V.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

R.V. : \u201cThe legs of the lame hang loose!\u201d
\nThe Heb. is: \u201cThe legs of the lame are lifted up\u201d (see A.V. margin).
\nHere \u201clegs\u201d are put for the clothes which being lifted up expose the lameness.
\nSo when a fool attempts to utter a parable, he soon exposes himself.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nProv. 28:26<\/a> \u201cHe that trusteth in his own heart (i.e<\/i>., understanding) is a fool.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nHos. 7:11<\/a> \u201cEphraim also is like a silly dove without heart\u201d:

\nMatt. 6:21<\/a> \u201cWhere your treasure is, there will your heart
\n(i.e<\/i>., your thoughts and affections) be also.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nMatt. 16:19<\/a> \u201cWhatsoever thou (i.e<\/i>., by the word which thou shalt minister)
\nshalt bind (see Metonymy<\/i> of Adjunct) on earth.\u201d So 18:18<\/a>. Whatever this refers to,
\nPeter had neither the power nor the authority to pass it on to any one else.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nMatt. 24:45<\/a> \u201cWho then (i.e<\/i>., how great and blessed and happy)

\nThen we have two Metonymies<\/i>. First, oxen<\/i> are put (by Metonymy\u00a0<\/i>of the subject)
\nfor the sacrifices<\/i> offered; and then the lips<\/i> are put (by Metonymy<\/i> of the cause)
\nfor the confession made by them. So that the verse really should read :
\n\u201cSo shall we offer our sacrifices of confession and prayer\u201d;
\nbeing exactly what is expressed in Psa. 51:17<\/a> (19). \u201c The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, etc<\/i>.,\u201d and Heb. 13:15<\/a>: \u201cBy him … let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to his name.\u201d

\ni.e<\/i>., a sacrifice, referring to the sin-offering which was burned without the camp including the skin and the dung, no soul having a right to eat of it. So Christ is our

That it is a figure is clear, for the verse reads on: \u201cWe have an altar, whereof (\u1f10\u03be \u03bf\u1f57, ex hou, of which) they have no right to eat which serve the Tabernacle.\u201d People do not eat \u201caltars\u201d! \u201cHeaven\u201d is frequently put for \u201cGod,\u201d who dwells there. We say \u201cHeaven forbid,\u201d \u201cHeaven protect us,\u201d etc<\/i>. So the lost son says, \u201cI have sinned against heaven.\u201d
\nHe means, against God!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nThis does not at all affect the truths concerning the kingdom,
\nas contrasted with the Church.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

While the kingdom or reign is God’s<\/i>, yet it has different aspects. In Matthew, the expression \u201cKingdom of heaven\u201d corresponds with the aspect of the kingdom as presented in that Gospel.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Our suggestion is that in each case the words \u201ckingdom of heaven\u201d were the words spoken in Aramaic; but that, in presenting them in Greek, the figure is translated,
\nand given idiomatically in Mark and Luke.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The effect of this figure, then, here, is that, by the figure of Enallage<\/i><\/a>, the emphasis is placed on the words \u201cheaven\u201d and \u201cGod,\u201d and not on the word \u201ckingdom\u201d; and by the figure of Heterosis<\/i><\/a>, the plural, \u201cheavens\u201d (as it is in the Greek) is put for the singular to still more emphasize the expression.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nHence the phrase means that this reign is the Divine or Heavenly Dominion,
\nin contrast with all the kingdoms which are of or from this world.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nIn Matthew, the aspect of it is Old Testament and Jewish; while in the other gospels the aspect is larger and wider in its sphere.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The reign and rule of God comprises all in time and space, and many are the spheres and departments embraced within it. Thus, while the Church of God is embraced in it, the church is not the kingdom. While Israel is embraced in it, Israel does not exhaust the reign and dominion of God. While the Gentiles come within the reach of that dominion, they are neither the kingdom itself nor the church.
\nAll these are distinct from each other; and yet all are embraced in the universal reign of heaven; the church occupying its own unique position as the Body of Christ, in whom all things are to be headed up (Eph. 1:10<\/a>, 20-23<\/a>).<\/span><\/span>
