Metonymy is a figure by which one name or noun is used instead of another,
to which it stands in a certain relation.
<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The change is in the noun,
and only in a verb as connected with the action proceeding from it.
<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The names of persons are put by Metonymy<\/i> for something which stands in a
special relation to them. Thus we speak of \u201ca stanhope\u201d (carriage), from the
Hon. Mr. Stanhope; \u201ca brougham,\u201d from Lord Brougham; \u201cboycotting,\u201d from
Capt. Boycott; a \u201cblanket,’\u201d \u201cnegus,\u201d a \u201cspencer,\u201d a \u201cd’oyley,\u201d etc<\/i>., from the respective inventors.
<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Thus it will be seen that Metonymy<\/i> is not founded on resemblance, but on relation<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


When we say that a person writes \u201ca bad hand,\u201d we do not mean a hand,
but we use the noun \u201chand\u201d for the characters which it writes.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Metonymy<\/i> is of four kinds: viz<\/i>.,
of the Cause<\/i>, of the Effect<\/i>, of the\u00a0Subject<\/i>, and of the Adjunct<\/i>.
<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I. Metonymy of the Cause<\/b><\/i><\/a> is when the cause is put for the effect:
i.e<\/i>., when the doer is put for the thing done;
or, the instrument for that which is effected;
or, where the action is put for the effect produced by the action.
<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

II. Metonymy of the Effect<\/b><\/i><\/a> is the opposite of the above:
when the effect is put for the cause.
<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

III. Metonymy of the Subject<\/b><\/i><\/a> is when the subject is put for something pertaining to it: as the possessor for the possessed; the thing signified for the sign.
<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

IV. Metonymy of the Adjunct<\/b><\/i>, on the contrary, is when that which pertains to anything is put for the thing itself.

Some grammarians have added a fifth Metonymy, where the antecedent is put for the consequent; but it really belongs to Metonymy of the Cause.

It is so called because some circumstance pertaining to the subject is put for the subject itself; e.g<\/i>., the contents for the container, the possession for the possessor, etc<\/i>.
It is divided into the seven following parts: \u2014
<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 i. The ADJUNCT<\/a> or <\/span><\/span>ACCIDENT<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> is put for the subject.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

That which is an accident, or belongs to anything, is put for the subject or the thing itself to which it belongs.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a01. The ABSTRACT<\/a> is put for the concrete; or, the ATTRIBUTE<\/a> is put for that to which anything is attributed.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Gen. 31:54<\/a> \u201cThen Jacob killed beasts upon the mount\u201d:
i.e<\/i>., he offered sacrifices, as the A.V. renders it.
Here, by Metonymy, the abstract is put for its concrete.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Gen. 42:38<\/a> \u201cThen shall ye bring down my grey hairs (i.e<\/i>., me, in my old age) with sorrow to the grave.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Gen. 46:34<\/a> \u201cFor every shepherd is an abomination (i.e<\/i>., an abominable person) unto the Egyptians.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


1 Sam. 15:29<\/a> \u201cAnd also the eternity<\/a> of Israel will not lie nor repent.\u201d
Here, the A.V. renders it \u201cStrength\u201d, but the attribute \u201cEternity\u201d is put for Him to whom it is attributed: i.e<\/i>., the eternal One: i.e<\/i>., God. See the A.V. margin.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Here, through missing the Metonymy in the first part of this sentence, the A.V.
has been obliged to alter the latter part, and put in *the margin, \u201cHeb., shall howl<\/i>.\u201d
But if we note that \u201csongs\u201d are put for singers, then we have perfect sense:\u2014
\u201cAnd the singers of the temple shall howl in that day.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Luke 1:78<\/a> \u201cWhereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us\u201d:
i.e<\/i>., the morning star which precedes the day. So John the Baptist,
as the \u201cmorning star,\u201d preceded Christ, Who is \u201cthe Sun of Righteousness.\u201d

Here, \u201ccircumcision\u201d is put for those who are circumcised; and uncircumcision for uncircumcised persons, as in 15:8<\/a> and Gal. 2:9, 12<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Rom. 8:19<\/a> \u201cThe earnest expectation of the creation (i.e<\/i>., created things or creatures) waiteth.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Rom. 11:7<\/a> \u201cBut the election (i.e<\/i>., elect persons) hath obtained it.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Eph. 1:21<\/a> \u201cHere, the attributes are put for the beings who possess them:\u2014

i.e<\/i>., \u201cof your substance,\u201d as in A.V.; i.e<\/i>., that which your strength has procured.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Job 31:26<\/a> \u201cIf I beheld the light when it shined.\u201d
Here \u201cthe light\u201d is put for the sun, as in A.V. (see margin).
So also 37:21<\/a> and Hab. 3:4<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Prov. 5:10<\/a> \u201cLest strangers be filled with thy strength\u201d:
i.e<\/i>., thy wealth, as in the A.V.

Prov. 15:6<\/a> \u201cIn the house of the righteous is much strength\u201d:\u00a0
i.e<\/i>., treasure, as in the A.V.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Isa. 1:18<\/a> \u201cThough your sins be as scarlet.\u201d
It is a question whether here \u201csins\u201d be not put for sinners.
Certainly persons are spoken of, and it is not easy to think of \u201csins,\u201d as such,
becoming white! It is the sinner himself who is thus made \u201cwhiter than snow.\u201d
Psa. 51:7<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Isa. 10:14<\/a> \u201cAnd my hand hath found (or found means to reach)
as a nest the strength of the peoples\u201d:
i.e<\/i>., their riches, gotten by their strength, as in the A.V.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Isa. 10:27<\/a> \u201cBecause of the oil\u201d:
i.e<\/i>., the anointing<\/a>, as in the A.V.
But, from the reference to Gideon’s exploits which we have in verse 26, the sense may be:
\u201cAnd yoke snapt at sight of oil\u201d:
i.e<\/i>., as Midian’s yoke was distended till it snapt<\/i> before the oil<\/i> (or resin<\/i>) burning in Gideon’s lamps<\/i>, so will Asshur’s yoke, again, recoil (\u05d9\u05b8\u05e1\u05d5\u05bc\u05e8 verse 26)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> from thy neck, before the hot \u201cblast\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> (<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>see <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>37:7<\/a>, and compare Psa. 18:15<\/a> (16); see, too, 2 Thess. 2:8<\/a>).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Isa. 30:6<\/a> \u201cThey will carry their strength (i.e<\/i>., riches) upon the shoulders of young asses.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Here \u201cstrength\u201d is put for the riches and presents which Israel’s ambassadors were taking down to Egypt, to induce Egypt to help Israel against Assyria. In verses 2 and 3, \u201cstrength<\/a>\u201d is used literally. But in the next verse (7)<\/a>, it is put by Metonymy<\/i> for \u201cEgypt,\u201d in whose strength they trusted.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

These words are usually taken as an exhortation to the Lord’s people to sit still and do nothing. But the fact is just the opposite. They are spoken of Egypt, on whom Israel was relying for help against the Assyrians. See verses 1, 3: \u201cThe strength of Pharaoh\u201d was what they trusted in. But Jehovah declared that that would be a vain trust, for…..
