This is the Latin name of the figure; from <em>similis<\/em>, <em>like<\/em>, <em>similar<\/em>,<br \/>\n<em>resembling closely<\/em>, or <em>in many respects<\/em>.<br \/>\nThis figure has no corresponding Greek name.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nIndeed it can hardly be called a figure, or an unusual form of expression,<br \/>\nseeing it is quite literal, and one of the commonest forms of expression in use.<br \/>\nIt is a cold, clear, plain statement as to a resemblance between words and things.<br \/>\nThe whole application of the figure lies in this Resemblance, and not in Representation, as in <em>Metonymy<\/em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/stream\/cu31924029277047#page\/n789\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">*<\/a><\/strong>; or in Implication, as in <a href=\"https:\/\/figuresofspeechinthebible.net\/?page_id=3802\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Hypocatastasis<\/em><\/a>;<br \/>\nor, in Association, as in <em>Synecdoche<\/em>.<br \/>\n<strong>*<span style=\"font-size: small;\">I believe the author means <a href=\"https:\/\/figuresofspeechinthebible.net\/?page_id=3891\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Metaphor<\/em><\/a> here.<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nAccordingly, when this resemblance is not apparent, or is counter to our ordinary perception of things, it jars upon the ear. Such <em>Similes<\/em> abound in human writings. Hence the pleasure of studying the use of them in the Word of God, where we have the Holy Spirit&#8217;s own perfect work.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nMany examples could be given of false, or incongruous <em>Similes<\/em> in human writings. Take, for example, Montgomery&#8217;s poem on Satan:*<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2026..<\/span>\u201cLo I the bright dew-bead on the bramble lies,<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2026 &#8230;<\/span>Like liquid rapture upon Beauty&#8217;s eyes.\u201d<br \/>\n* Quoted in Macbeth&#8217;s <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/stream\/mightmirthoflite00macbuoft#page\/170\/mode\/2up\/search\/Montgomery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Might and Mirth of Literature<\/a><\/span><\/em>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><br \/>\nWe fail to see any resemblance between beauteous eyes and a bramble; or, any meaning at all in \u201cliquid rapture.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nSo Mrs. Browning:<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2026..<\/span>\u201cThen the bitter sea<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2026. .<\/span>Inexorably pushed between us both;<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2026. .<\/span>And sweeping up the steep with my despair,<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2026. .<\/span>Threw us out as a pasture to the stars.\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nWe fail to see any resemblance between a ship and a pasture;<br \/>\nand why stars go out to grass; or, when they do, why they should feed on ships and their passengers!<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nNo such inexplicable <em>similes<\/em> as these can be found in the Scriptures.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nWhen one is used there, it is \u201cfor our learning;\u201d and the more we study it the more we may learn.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nThey are usually marked by the Caph (<span style=\"font-family: SBL Hebrew;\">\u05db<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">)\u2020 in Hebrew; and in the Greek by <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u1f61\u03c2 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">(<em>h\u014ds<\/em>), <em>as<\/em>; <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03b8\u03ce\u03c2 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">(<em>kath\u014ds<\/em>), <em>like as<\/em>; or, by some seventeen other kindred words *; and the English: \u201cas\u201d, \u201clike as\u201d, \u201ceven as,\u201d \u201clike\u201d <em>etc.<\/em><br \/>\n\u2020 <em>Kaf<\/em><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n<strong>* <\/strong>See under the word<strong> \u201cAS\u201d <\/strong>in<strong> A Critical Lexicon and Concordance, <\/strong>by the same author. Longman and Co., 15s.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<em>Simile<\/em> differs from Comparison, in that comparison admits of dissimilitudes as well as resemblances.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<em>Simile<\/em> differs from <em>Allegory<\/em> (<em>q.v<\/em>.) in that <em>Allegory<\/em> names only one of the two things and leaves us to find, and make the resemblance with the other, ourselves.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<em>Simile<\/em> differs from <em>Metaphor<\/em> (<em>q.v<\/em>.), in that it merely states resemblance, while <em>Metaphor<\/em> boldly transfers the representation.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<em>Simile<\/em> differs from <em>Hypocatastasis<\/em> (<em>q.v<\/em>.), in that the latter only implies the resemblance, while <em>Simile<\/em> states it.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<em>Simile<\/em>, therefore, is destitute of feeling. It is clear, beautiful, gentle, true to fact, but cold and too deliberate for passion.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nAll this will be seen as the <em>Similes<\/em> are studied. They require no explanation. They explain and are intended to explain themselves. It is scarcely necessary to give any examples. They abound throughout the Scripture, and impart to it much of its beauty and force.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nPsa. 1:3\u2014\u201cHe shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water.\u201d<br \/>\nHere, the similitude tells us that the man who meditates in God&#8217;s word is planted and protected, just as a tree in a garden is cared for as a \u201ctree of the field\u201d is not.<br \/>\nSee under <em><a href=\"https:\/\/figuresofspeechinthebible.net\/?page_id=4852\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ellipsis<\/a><\/em>, page 97.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Psa&amp;c=1&amp;v=1&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Psa. 1:4<\/a>\u2014\u201cThe ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.\u201d<br \/>\nThe contrast between the driven chaff and the \u201cplanted\u201d tree is most striking and solemn.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nThe two comparisons are the great features of the Psalm, the structure of which is as follows: \u2014<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2026..<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">A \/ a \/ 1. The ungodly punished in not standing among the godly.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nThen the last verse stands out alone in solemn grandeur as giving the reason for the whole.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nPsa. 5:12 (13)\u2014\u201cWith favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.\u201d<br \/>\nAnd why is His \u201cfavour\u201d (<em>i.e<\/em>., His grace, which is favour to the unworthy) like a shield?<br \/>\nBecause \u201cin his favour is life,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Psa&amp;c=30&amp;v=5&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Psa. 30:5<\/a> (6);<br \/>\nbecause in His favour there is mercy (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Isa&amp;c=60&amp;v=10&amp;t=KJV#10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isa. 60:10<\/a>);<br \/>\nbecause in His favour there is preservation (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Psa&amp;c=86&amp;v=2&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Psa. 86:2<\/a>, margin);<br \/>\nbecause in His favour there is security, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Psa&amp;c=41&amp;v=11&amp;t=KJV#11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Psa. 41:11<\/a> (12):<br \/>\nand therefore the prayer of all such favoured ones will ever be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Psa&amp;c=106&amp;v=4&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Psa. 106:4<\/a>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nPsa. 17:8\u2014\u201cKeep me as the apple of the eye [<em>is kept<\/em>].\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nPsa. 131:2\u2014\u201cI have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nMatt. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=7&amp;v=24&amp;t=KJV#24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">7:24-27<\/a>\u2014Here we have a magnificent and extended <em>Simile<\/em>,<br \/>\nalmost amounting to a parable. It is too long to quote, and too plain to need elucidation. It explains to us very clearly and forcibly its own powerful lesson.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nMatt. 9:36\u2014\u201cThey . . . were scattered abroad as sheep having no shepherd.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n1 Pet. 2:25\u2014\u201cYe were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nHere we have <em>Simile<\/em>, which stands in marked contrast to the Proverb in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=2Pe&amp;c=2&amp;v=22&amp;t=KJV#22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2 Pet. 2: 22<\/a>,<br \/>\nas to the \u201csow\u201d. Both the stray sheep and the washed sow \u201creturn\u201d. But the one returns to the shepherd, and the other to the mire. We may note also that the verb \u201creturned\u201d as used of the \u201csheep\u201d is the passive form; while, as used of the \u201csow,\u201d it is the active form. Showing that the \u201csheep\u201d is made to return by a constraining power, while the \u201csow\u201d returns of its own act and free-will.<br \/>\nSee under <em>Paroemia<\/em>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nSometimes a <em>Simile<\/em> is really used as a figure, implying not merely a resemblance but the actual thing itself.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nGen. 25:31\u2014\u201cSell me as on this day (<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Hebrew;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\ufb3b\u05b7\ufb39\ufb4b\u05dd <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em>kayy\u014dm<\/em>)\u201d:<em> i.e<\/em>., on this very day.<br \/>\nSee, too, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Gen&amp;c=25&amp;v=33&amp;t=KJV#33\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">verse 33<\/a>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nNum. 11:1\u2014The Heb. reads: \u201cAnd when the People was as murmurers, it was evil in the ears of Jehovah.\u201d Here the resemblance was real; <em>i.e<\/em>., they were murmurers.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nNeh. 7:2\u2014\u201cI gave my brother Hanani . . . charge over Jerusalem: for he acted as a faithful man (<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Hebrew;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\ufb3b\u05b0\u05d0\u05b4\u05d9\u05e9<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">), <em>etc<\/em>.\u201d :<em> i.e<\/em>. he was a faithful man.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nIsa. 1:7\u2014\u201cIt is desolate as the overthrow of strangers.\u201d<br \/>\nSee A.V. margin.<br \/>\nSee under <em>Antimereia<\/em>, and compare <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Isa&amp;c=13&amp;v=6&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isa. 13:6<\/a>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nIsa. 1:9\u2014\u201cExcept the Lord of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nHere the words of the godly remnant declare the resemblance; and in the next verse Jehovah endorses it as true; addressing the ungodly but most religious nation actually as \u201cthe rulers of Sodom \u201cand\u201d the people of Gomorrah.\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nPsa. 122:3\u2014\u201cJerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together\u201d: <em>i.e<\/em>. :,<br \/>\nit was a city so built.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nHos. 5:10\u2014\u201cThe princes of Judah were like them that remove the bound\u201d: <em>i.e<\/em>., they actually committed this sin, the greatness of which is seen from<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Deu&amp;c=19&amp;v=14&amp;t=KJV#14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Deut. 19:14<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Deu&amp;c=27&amp;v=17&amp;t=KJV#17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">27:17<\/a>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nMatt. 14:5\u2014\u201cBecause they counted him as a prophet\u201d: <em>i.e<\/em>., as actually a prophet.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nLuke 22:44\u2014\u201cHis sweat was as it were great drops of blood &#8220;: <em>i.e<\/em>., it was.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nJohn 1:14\u2014\u201cAnd we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father\u201d: <em>i.e<\/em>., the glory of Him who was really the only begotten Son of the Father.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nRom. 9:32\u2014\u201cWherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were<br \/>\n(<em>i.e<\/em>., actually) by the works of the law.\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n2 Cor. 2:17\u2014\u201cWe are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ: <em>i.e<\/em>., we speak really and truly sincere, pure, and Divine words.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n2 Cor. 3:18\u2014\u201cWe are all with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror<br \/>\n(<span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c0\u03c4\u03c1\u03af\u03b6\u03cc\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, <em>katoptrizomenoi<\/em>) the glory of the Lord, are transfigured to the same image, from glory to glory, even as from the Lord\u2014the Spirit\u201d: <em>i.e<\/em>., really by the actual operation of the Holy Spirit. His office is to glorify Christ; and those who are led by the Spirit do occupy themselves with Christ\u2014the heavenly object, and thus become like Him, heavenly, and that without an effort.
