\nAntanaclasis<\/a>\u00a0292<\/a>;<\/span><\/span>\u00a0“This is really Polyptoton. But here we repeat it in order to point out that the word “blessed” is used in two different senses. We do not bless God in the same way that He blesses us. The former word is always used of God, the latter may be used of men. The former word means the Being who is to be spoken well of, the latter means the being of whom good has been lastingly spoken\u2014 especially by God Himself.” <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nBenedictio<\/a>\u00a0919<\/a>\u00a0 “<\/span><\/span>An Expression of Feeling by Way of Benediction or Blessing.”
\n“I<\/span><\/span>t means both the act of blessing, and the blessing itself.
\nThe latter is called a beatitude or blessing.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nAntimereia 505<\/a>: “Where the former of the two nouns (both in regimen) is used for an adjective, and is to receive the emphasis <\/span><\/span>(…of His glorious grace).<\/span><\/span>“<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span>Antiptosis<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/a> <\/u>508<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/a>: ” The riches of his grace.” “By <\/span><\/span>Enallage<\/i><\/span><\/span> this would be gracious riches, but it means more than this. Grace is the subject, and it is the exceeding wealth of this wondrous grace which has abounded toward those who are ” accepted in the Beloved,”
\nBy Antiptosis the one is put for the other, and the noun ” riches” is put for the adjective : <\/span><\/span>i.e.<\/i><\/span><\/span> His exceeding rich grace.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Metalepsis<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span> <\/u>610<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/a>: “…redemption through his blood…” blood is put, by Metonymy, for his death, and his death means what was accomplished by it. Metalepsis is a Metonymy within a Metonymy.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span>Idioma<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/a> <\/u>831<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/a>: “riches” means great abundance. We use this same Idiom commonly in modern English, with examples such as “a wealth of knowledge”, or a “rich flavor”.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span>Anthropopatheia<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/a> <\/u>893<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/a>: “Riches” is a condescending to the level of human understanding. The limitlessness of God is beyond human comprehension.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n“In Judith 2:2 we have the remarkable expression: Nebuchadnezzar “called together all his servants, and all his great men, and communicated with them his secret counsel”: i.e<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>., the secret of his will. The word <\/span><\/span><\/span>\u03bc\u03c5\u03c3\u03c4\u1f75\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd<\/span><\/span><\/span> is the same in each case, but in the case of Nebuchadnezzar it was the secret of his <\/span><\/span><\/span>\u03b2\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u1f75<\/span><\/span><\/span> (<\/span><\/span><\/span>boulee<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>): <\/span><\/span><\/span>i.e<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>., his will, because he had determined it: while in Eph. 1:9, it is the secret of God’s <\/span><\/span><\/span>\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/span><\/span><\/a> (<\/span><\/span><\/span>theleema<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>): <\/span><\/span><\/span>i.e<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>., His will, because He <\/span><\/span><\/span>desired<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span> it. Hence the meaning is “God’s secret purpose or counsel.”<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Ellipsis<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>: On page <\/span><\/span>89<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> Dr. Bullinger states “In whom ye also <\/span><\/span><\/span>trusted<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>.” “Here the verb is repeated from verse 12: but it seems rather that another verb should be repeated, from verse 11: “In whom ye also were allotted as <\/span><\/span><\/span>God’s own inheritance<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>, ”for it is the inheritance which is the subject of the context and not the matter of trusting.
\nThe R.V. neither sees, nor “supplies the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Ellipsis<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>, treating it as an <\/span><\/span><\/span>Anacoluthon<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span> (<\/span><\/span><\/span>q.v<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>.).”<\/span><\/span><\/span>

\nComment: In my opinion, the primary subject of the chapter is God Himself, for if we go all the way back to verse 3 we read “Blessed [be<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>] <\/span><\/span><\/span>the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly [<\/span><\/span><\/span>places<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>]<\/span><\/span><\/span> in Christ:”.
\nThe words “God” and “Father” are in th<\/span><\/span><\/span>e <\/span><\/span><\/span>nominative, masculine, singular case<\/span><\/span><\/a>. P<\/span><\/span><\/span>aul then procedes to present the details for this statement with many reasons God is, and should be, blessed.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
(Verse 12) “That we should be to the praise of his glory, <\/span><\/span><\/span>who <\/span><\/span><\/span>first trusted<\/span><\/span><\/a> in<\/span><\/span><\/span> Christ.
\nReferencing Blue Letter Bible, “first trusted” is <\/span><\/span><\/span>\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03b7\u03bb\u03c0\u03b9\u03ba\u1f79\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/span><\/span><\/span> (<\/span><\/span><\/span>proelpikotas<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>), a verb in the perfect tense (“and describes an action which is viewed as having been completed in the past, once and for all, not needing to be repeated.”). This point should be considered in the Ellipsis [<\/span><\/span><\/span>trusted<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>] of verse 13.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
