Greek, <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\">\u1f00\u03bd\u03ac\u03b2\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/span>, <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">from <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\">\u1f00\u03bd\u03ac <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">(<i>ana<\/i>), <i>up<\/i>, and <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\">\u03b2\u03b1\u03af\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> (<i>bainein<\/i>), <i>to go<\/i>; <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\">\u03b2\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">(<i>basis<\/i>) means <i>a stepping<\/i>, or <i>a step<\/i>. So that <i>Anabasis<\/i> means <i>a going up<\/i>* or <i>ascent<\/i>.<br \/>\nThe Figure is so called when a writing, speech, or discourse, <i>ascends up<\/i> step by step, each with an increase of emphasis or sense.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> *<span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> Hence, the journey or expedition of Cyrus up from the coast into Central Asia is called his <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>Anabasis<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, by Xenophon.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This figure was called by the Latins INCREMENTUM (<i>In&#8217;-cr\u0113-men&#8217;-tum<\/i>), <i>growth<\/i> or <i>increase<\/i>, from <i>incresco<\/i>, <i>to grow on<\/i> or <i>upon<\/i>. Hence our words \u201cincrease\u201d and \u201cincrement\u201d.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When this increase or ascent is from weaker to stronger expression, and is confined to <i>words<\/i>, it is called <i>Climax<\/i> (<i>q.v<\/i>.).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">[N.B.\u2014When the sense or gradation is downward instead of upward, it is called<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/figuresofspeechinthebible.net\/?page_id=1175\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Catabasis<\/i><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.]<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The figure was also called AUXESIS (<i>aux-ee&#8217;-sis<\/i>), <i>growth<\/i> or <i>increase<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This increase is often connected with <i>Parallelism<\/i> (<em>q.v<\/em>.).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When the increase is not a mere increase of vehemence, or of evil, but leads up from things inferior to things superior; from things terrestial to things celestial; from things mundane to things spiritual; the figure is called ANAGOGE (<i>an&#8217;-a-g\u014d-gee<\/i>), from <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\">\u1f00\u03bd\u03ac<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> (<i>ana<\/i>),<i> again<\/i> or <i>up<\/i>, and <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\">\u1f04\u03b3\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<\/span> (<i>agein<\/i>), <i>to lead<\/i>, a<i> leading up<\/i>.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Psa. 1:1\u2014\u201cBlessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here is a triple <i>Anabasis<\/i> depending on <i>Parallelism<\/i> (<i>q.v<\/i>.). The first are <i>impious<\/i>, as to their mind. The second are <i>sinners<\/i>, who not only think, but carry out the workings of their evil minds. The third are <i>scorners<\/i>, glorying in their wickedness and scoffing at righteousness.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Again, the first continue in that mind, taking evil counsel. The second carry it out, as the principle of their walk. The third settle down in their evil, as on a seat.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff; font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These three are exemplified in the first three verses of the next Psalm, where a corresponding <i>Anabasis<\/i> is seen: \u2014<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Psa. 2:1, 2, 3\u2014First, we have the \u201cheathen\u201d: <i>i.e.<\/i>, the Gentile nations;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> then \u201cthe peoples\u201d: <i>i.e.<\/i>, the Tribes of God, Israel imagining vain things; and in the third, we have \u201ckings\u201d and \u201crulers\u201d all conspiring together.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Acts 4:27 gives us the fulfilment:\u2014(1) we have the kings and rulers taking counsel;<br \/>\n(2) we have the rage and vain imaginations; and<br \/>\n(3) the open and actual rebellion.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> On Psa. 1:1, see page 350.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Psa. 7:5 \u2014 \u201c Let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it;<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Yea, let him tread down my life upon the earth.<br \/>\nAnd lay mine honour in the dust.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Psa. 18:37, 38\u2014 \u201cI have pursued mine enemies,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> And overtaken them:<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Neither did I turn again till they were consumed.<br \/>\nI have wounded them that they were not able to rise:<br \/>\nThey are fallen under my feet.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Isa. 1:4 \u2014 \u201cAh sinful nation,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> A people laden with iniquity,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> A seed of evildoers,<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Children that are corrupters.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ezek. 2:6\u2014\u201cAnd thou son of man,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> be not afraid of them,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> neither be afraid of their words,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> though briers and thorns be with thee,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> and thou dost dwell among scorpions:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Be not afraid of the words,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> nor be dismayed at their looks,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> though they be a rebellious house.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And why this <i>Anabasis<\/i>? To impress upon us that whatever opposition we may encounter,<br \/>\nwe are to speak and give forth the word of God, whether men will hear or whether they will forbear (verses 5 and 7), and not to corrupt it or alter it to please the people:<br \/>\nto distribute versions of it, not \u201cthe best that people will take,\u201d but the best that we can make.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dan. 9:5 \u2014 \u201cWe have sinned, and have committed iniquity,<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">and have done wickedly,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">from thy judgments.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hab. 1:5 \u2014 \u201cBehold ye among the heathen,<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">and regard,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">and wonder marvellously:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For I will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Zech. 7:11\u2014 \u201cBut they refused to hearken,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> And pulled away the shoulder,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> And stopped their ears that they should not hear.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, <i>etc<\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thus the <i>Anabasis<\/i> powerfully and emphatically sets forth the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;
