\n<\/span><\/span>An Increase of Sense in successive Sentences.<\/i><\/span><\/span>

.<\/span> A-n\u0103b’-a-s\u012ds<\/span><\/i>. Greek, \u1f00\u03bd\u03ac\u03b2\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/span>, from \u1f00\u03bd\u03ac <\/span>(ana<\/i>), up<\/i>, and \u03b2\u03b1\u03af\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<\/span> (bainein<\/i>), to go<\/i>; \u03b2\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/span> (basis<\/i>) means a stepping<\/i>, or a step<\/i>. So that Anabasis<\/i> means a going up<\/i>* or ascent<\/i>.
\nThe Figure is so called when a writing, speech, or discourse, ascends up<\/i> step by step, each with an increase of emphasis or sense.<\/span>
\n * Hence, the journey or expedition of Cyrus up from the coast into Central Asia is called his <\/span>Anabasis<\/i><\/span>, by Xenophon.<\/span><\/span>
\n.<\/span>
\n.<\/span>This figure was called by the Latins INCREMENTUM (In’-cr\u0113-men’-tum<\/i>), growth<\/i> or increase<\/i>, from incresco<\/i>, to grow on<\/i> or upon<\/i>. Hence our words \u201cincrease\u201d and \u201cincrement\u201d.<\/span>
\n.<\/span>
\n .<\/span>When this increase or ascent is from weaker to stronger expression, and is confined to words<\/i>, it is called Climax<\/i> (q.v<\/i>.).<\/span>
\n.<\/span>
\n .<\/span> [N.B.\u2014When the sense or gradation is downward instead of upward, it is called<\/span> Catabasis<\/i><\/a><\/span>.]<\/span><\/span>
\n.<\/span>
\n .The figure was also called AUXESIS (aux-ee’-sis<\/i>), growth<\/i> or increase<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n.<\/span>This increase is often connected with Parallelism<\/i> (q.v<\/em>.).<\/span>
\n.<\/span>
\n.<\/span>When the increase is not a mere increase of vehemence, or of evil, but leads up from things inferior to things superior; from things terrestial to things celestial; from things mundane to things spiritual; the figure is called ANAGOGE (an’-a-g\u014d-gee<\/i>), from \u1f00\u03bd\u03ac<\/span> (ana<\/i>), again<\/i> or up<\/i>, and \u1f04\u03b3\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<\/span> (agein<\/i>), to lead<\/i>, a leading up<\/i>.<\/span>
\n.<\/span>
\n.<\/span>Psa. 1:1\u2014\u201cBlessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.\u201d<\/span>
\n.<\/span>
\n .<\/span>Here is a triple Anabasis<\/i> depending on Parallelism<\/i> (q.v<\/i>.). The first are impious<\/i>, as to their mind. The second are sinners<\/i>, who not only think, but carry out the workings of their evil minds. The third are scorners<\/i>, glorying in their wickedness and scoffing at righteousness.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n.<\/span>Again, the first continue in that mind, taking evil counsel. The second carry it out, as the principle of their walk. The third settle down in their evil, as on a seat.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

.<\/span>These three are exemplified in the first three verses of the next Psalm, where a corresponding Anabasis<\/i> is seen: \u2014<\/span>
\n.<\/span>
\n.<\/span>Psa. 2:1, 2, 3\u2014First, we have the \u201cheathen\u201d: i.e.<\/i>, the Gentile nations;<\/span>
\n then \u201cthe peoples\u201d: i.e.<\/i>, the Tribes of God, Israel imagining vain things; and in the third, we have \u201ckings\u201d and \u201crulers\u201d all conspiring together.<\/span>
\n.<\/span>
\n .<\/span>Acts 4:27 gives us the fulfilment:\u2014(1) we have the kings and rulers taking counsel;
\n(2) we have the rage and vain imaginations; and
\n(3) the open and actual rebellion.<\/span>

\n .<\/span>Psa. 7:5 \u2014 \u201c Let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it;<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/span>Yea, let him tread down my life upon the earth.
\nAnd lay mine honour in the dust.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n.<\/span>Psa. 18:37, 38\u2014 \u201cI have pursued mine enemies,<\/span>
\n And overtaken them:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/span>Neither did I turn again till they were consumed.
\nI have wounded them that they were not able to rise:
\nThey are fallen under my feet.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n .<\/span>Isa. 1:4 \u2014 \u201cAh sinful nation,<\/span>
\n A people laden with iniquity,<\/span>
\n A seed of evildoers,<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/span>Children that are corrupters.\u201d<\/span>

\n.<\/span>Ezek. 2:6\u2014\u201cAnd thou son of man,<\/span>
\n be not afraid of them,<\/span>
\n neither be afraid of their words,<\/span>
\n though briers and thorns be with thee,<\/span>
\n and thou dost dwell among scorpions:<\/span>
\n Be not afraid of the words,<\/span>
\n nor be dismayed at their looks,<\/span>
\n though they be a rebellious house.\u201d<\/span>

\n .<\/span>And why this Anabasis<\/i>? To impress upon us that whatever opposition we may encounter,
\nwe are to speak and give forth the word of God, whether men will hear or whether they will forbear (verses 5 and 7), and not to corrupt it or alter it to please the people:
\nto distribute versions of it, not \u201cthe best that people will take,\u201d but the best that we can make.<\/span>
\n.<\/span>
\n .<\/span>Dan. 9:5 \u2014 \u201cWe have sinned, and have committed iniquity,<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/span>and have done wickedly,
\n<\/span><\/span>and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>from thy judgments.\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/span>.<\/span>
\n .<\/span>Hab. 1:5 \u2014 \u201cBehold ye among the heathen,<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/span>and regard,
\n<\/span><\/span>and wonder marvellously:
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>For I will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you.\u201d<\/span>

\n .<\/span>Zech. 7:11\u2014 \u201cBut they refused to hearken,<\/span>
\n And pulled away the shoulder,<\/span>
\n And stopped their ears that they should not hear.<\/span>
\n Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, etc<\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n .<\/span>Thus the Anabasis<\/i> powerfully and emphatically sets forth the <\/span><\/span><\/span>secret cause of Israel’s trouble.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
