An Enumeration of the Parts of a Whole which has been mentioned.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nMe-ris’-mos<\/em>, Greek, \u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u1f79\u03c2 (merismos<\/i>), division<\/i>, from \u03bc\u1f73\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2 (meros<\/i>), a part<\/i>.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nThe figure is so called because, after mentioning a thing as a whole,
\nthe parts are afterwards enumerated. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nAlso EPIMERISMOS, which is merismos<\/i> with \u1f10\u03c0\u1f77 (epi<\/i>), upon<\/i>, prefixed
\n(Ep’-i-m\u0115-ris’-mus<\/i>).
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It was called also DIALLAGE (D\u012b-al’-la-gee<\/i>), \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03bb\u03bb\u03b1\u03b3\u1f75, interchange<\/i>, from \u03b4\u03b9\u03ac (dia<\/i>), through<\/i>, or asunder<\/i>, and \u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u1f71\u03c3\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd (allassein<\/i>), to make other than it is<\/i>, to change<\/i> throughout<\/i>.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Latins called it DISTRIBUTIO (Dis-tri-bu’-ti-o<\/i>), and DISCRIMINATIO
\n(Dis’crim’-i-na-ti-o<\/i>).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nAlso DIGESTIO (Di-ges’-ti-o<\/i>), i.e, reduction to order<\/i>, classification<\/i>.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Though these names express, in the first instance, division, we have classed the figure under figures of addition; because, after the thing has been named and mentioned, it is divided up, and the various parts are added together to enhance the effect, increase the emphasis, and amplify the sense.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Isa. 24:1-3 \u00a0where, after stating the fact, \u201cBehold, the Lord maketh the earth empty,\u201d the statement is amplified, and the way in which God will do this and scatter the People is afterwards enumerated.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ezek. 36:4\u2014After saying \u201cYe mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord God (Adonai Jehovah),\u201d the word is spoken, not only to the mountains, but to the hills and rivers, and valleys, and desolate wastes, and the cities that are forsaken. And all this to show how complete shall be the blessing for the land of Israel.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Rom. 2:6-8\u2014Here, after stating that God \u201cwill render to every man according to his deeds\u201d in verse 6, verses 7 and 8 go on to enumerate the particulars of the two great classes of deeds.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Gal. 5:19-21\u2014\u201cThe works of the flesh\u201d are first mentioned as a whole, and then the whole sixteen are named and enumerated.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nGal. 5:22, 23\u2014\u201cThe fruit of the Spirit\u201d is first mentioned, and then the nine manifestations of it are enumerated. It is \u201cfruit\u201d in the singular, though made up of many parts like a cluster of grapes.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
