It is used of an assemblage of terms or species brought together without being first mentioned as a whole, and not being necessarily the distribution of the parts of any one thing.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\nThe figure is also called <span style=\"color: #666666;\"><i>APARITHMESIS<\/i><\/span> (<i>ap-a-rith&#8217;-mee-sis<\/i>), from <span style=\"font-family: GentiumAlt;\"><i>\u1f00\u03c0\u1f79<\/i><\/span> (<i>apo<\/i>) <i>from<\/i> or <i>off<\/i>, and <span style=\"font-family: GentiumAlt;\"><i>\u1f00\u03c1\u03b9\u03b8\u03bc\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd<\/i><\/span> (<i>arithmein<\/i>), <i>to count<\/i>. Hence, to <i>count off<\/i>, <i>enumerate<\/i>. The Latins, from this, called it <span style=\"color: #666666;\"><i>ENUMERATIO<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, <\/span>which has the same meaning.<br \/>\nThe Latin term for <i>Synathr\u0153smus<\/i> is <span style=\"color: #666666;\"><i>CONGERIES<\/i><\/span> (<i>con-ge&#8217;-ri-ees<\/i>) from <i>con<\/i>, <i>together<\/i>, and <i>gerere<\/i>, <i>to<\/i> <i>bear<\/i>, <i>carry<\/i> or <i>bring<\/i>; and denotes <i>a heap<\/i>, or <i>combination<\/i>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/>\nFrom the fact that such enumeration or combination sometimes made the argument or statement drag, the figure was called <span style=\"color: #666666;\"><i>SYRMOS<\/i><\/span>, which is the Greek <span style=\"font-family: GentiumAlt;\"><i>\u03c3\u03c5\u03c1\u03bc\u03cc\u03c2<\/i><\/span> (<i>syrmos<\/i>), <i>a<\/i> <i>trailing<\/i>, from <span style=\"font-family: GentiumAlt;\"><i>\u03c3\u1f7b\u03c1\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<\/i><\/span> (<i>surein<\/i>), t<i>o drag<\/i>, <i>trail along<\/i>. And, because a number of different words were thus united, it was also called <span style=\"color: #666666;\"><i>EIRMOS<\/i><\/span> (<i>eir&#8217;-mos<\/i>), from <span style=\"font-family: GentiumAlt;\"><i>\u03b5\u1f34\u03c1\u03c9 <\/i><\/span>(eiro), <i>to string together<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\nIt differs from <a href=\"https:\/\/figuresofspeechinthebible.net\/?page_id=1236\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Merismus<\/i><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">in that the things enumerated are not first briefly mentioned under one head: and it differs from <em><a href=\"https:\/\/figuresofspeechinthebible.net\/?page_id=1384\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Synonymia<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/em>, in that they are not synonymous, but may be of many kinds and descriptions.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\nIt also differs from <a href=\"https:\/\/figuresofspeechinthebible.net\/?page_id=1274\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Symperasma<\/i><\/a><\/span>,<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> in that they do not occur at the<\/span> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>conclusion<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">, but in the course of what is said.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The use of the figure is to enrich a discourse, or part of it, by enumerating particulars, or by multiplying epithets.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\nAll the figures which we are grouping under this head are figures of <i>Amplification<\/i>; otherwise this is called by some <i>Amplificatio<\/i>. But we have used this as a general term for the whole group and have not restricted it to any one particular figure.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Isa. 1:11, 13 \u2014\u201cTo what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the Lord: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs,<br \/>\nor of he goats . . . Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\nOne sentence would have expressed the whole, \u201cyour sacrifices are not pleasing to me.\u201d But, by the figure <i>Synathr<\/i><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><i>\u0153<\/i><\/span><i>smos<\/i>, all kinds of sacrifices are enumerated, and the sense is thus amplified and emphasized to show that, with all their outward show of \u201creligion,\u201d there was no true worship of the spirit and heart. So with the feasts, in verse 14, and with prayers, in verse 15. The figure is used here to emphasize the fact that religious ordinances and services are nothing in themselves.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\nIn the days of our Lord there was plenty of \u201creligion\u201d: Isa. 1 describes the abundance of it; but there was no heart in it.<br \/>\nIt was all form! and it was these very religious people (and not the rabble) who crucified the Lord!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\nIsa. 3:16-23 \u2014Here, the various ornaments of women are heaped together, to heighten the effect, and to emphasize the awful judgment of verses 24-4:1.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\nRom. 1:29-31 \u2014Here, many, abominations of the heathen are enumerated to show what is the outcome of the<br \/>\n\u201creprobate mind.\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">There are other figures in this passage.
