\n3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\n4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nAllegory: Continued Comparison by Representation or Implication. What the Armour of God and the wiles of the devil are is only implied, therefore a continued Hypocatastasis.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nMetonymy of the Adjunct: “The rulers of the darkness of this age”: <\/span><\/span>i.e<\/i><\/span><\/span>., of all the dark things done in this world; the word ” age ” pointing to a time coming when that rule will be done away.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nSynecdoche of the Part: “We wrestle not against flesh and blood”: <\/span><\/span>i.e<\/i><\/span><\/span>., against human beings, in contrast with wicked spiritual beings.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nGenitive of Apposition: “The breastplate of righteousness.” Here, it is not the genitive of possession as in verses 16 and 17, but of apposition, Christ’s righteousness being our breastplate.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nVerse 16
\nGenitive of Possession: “The shield of faith”: <\/span><\/span>i.e<\/i><\/span><\/span>., faith’s shield. The shield which faith possesses and uses: <\/span><\/span>viz<\/i><\/span><\/span>., Christ (Gen. 15:1; Psa. 84:11 (12). It is not the genitive of Apposition, which would regard faith itself as the shield; but, as in the next verse: \u2014<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
