Greek, <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\">\u1f10\u03ba\u03d5\u1f7d\u03bd\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, <i>a crying out,<\/i> <i>an exclamation<\/i>, from <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\">\u1f10\u03ba<\/span> (<i>ek<\/i>), <em>out<\/em>,<br \/>\nand <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u03d5\u03c9\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (<i>phonein<\/i>), <em>to speak<\/em>, from <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u03d5\u03c9\u03bd\u03ae<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (<i>ph\u014dnee<\/i>), <em>voice<\/em> or <em>sound<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThe figure is used when, through feeling, we change our mode of speech;<br \/>\nand, instead of merely making a statement, express it by an <i>exclamation<\/i>.<br \/>\nSo that <i>Ecphonesis<\/i> is an outburst of words, prompted by emotion, and is not used<br \/>\nas though any reply were expected.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nIt was called also ANAPHONESIS<\/span>, <i>an&#8217;-a-ph\u014d&#8217;-nee&#8217;-sis<\/i>, the same word, with <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\">\u1f00\u03bd\u1f71<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (<i>ana<\/i>), <i>up<\/i>, prefixed instead of <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\">\u1f10\u03ba<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (<i>ek<\/i>), <i>out<\/i>, <i>a lifting up of the voice<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThe exclamation itself is called <span style=\"color: #000000;\">ANAPHONEMA<\/span> (<i>An&#8217;-a-ph<\/i><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><i>\u014d<\/i><\/span><i>-nee &#8216;-ma<\/i>). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThe Latins called it EXCLAMATIO, <i>exclamation<\/i>.<br \/>\nBut note that, when the exclamation occurs at the end of a sentence, as an addition<br \/>\nby way of conclusion, it is called <i>Epiphonema <\/i>(see <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/stream\/cu31924029277047#page\/n519\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">page 464<\/a>).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When the <i>Ecphonesis<\/i> is an exclamation thrown in parenthetically, it is called <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>Interjectio <\/i>(see <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/stream\/cu31924029277047#page\/n533\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">page 478<\/a>). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nJosh. 7:7 \u2014 \u201cAnd Joshua said, Alas, O Lord God (Adonai Jehovah), wherefore hast thou at all brought up this people over Jordan,\u201d <em>etc<\/em>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n1 Chron. 11:17 \u2014\u201cAnd David longed, and said. Oh that one would give me drink<br \/>\nof the water of the well of Bethlehem, that is at the gate!\u201d<br \/>\nThis would come also under the figure <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><i>\u0152onismos<\/i> (<i>q.v<\/i>.).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nPsa. 22:1 (2) \u2014 \u201cMy God (Eli), my God (Eli), why hast thou for saken me?\u201d<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=27&amp;v=46&amp;t=KJV#46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matt. 27:46<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Mar&amp;c=15&amp;v=34&amp;t=KJV#34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark 15:34<\/a>). See under <em>Epizeuxis<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Psa&amp;c=57&amp;v=7&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psa. 57:7<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Psa&amp;c=57&amp;v=8&amp;t=RSV#8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">8<\/a>) is also a beautiful <i>Ecphonesis<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nPsa. 84:1(2)\u00a0 \u2014 \u201cHow amiable (<i>i.e<\/i>., How lovely, or How delightful) are thy tabernacles, O Lord of hosts,\u201d <i>etc<\/i>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nIsa. 1:4 \u2014 \u201cAh sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evil-doers, children that are corrupters.\u201d<br \/>\nSee under <em><a href=\"https:\/\/figuresofspeechinthebible.net\/?page_id=1384\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Synonymia<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/figuresofspeechinthebible.net\/?page_id=1165\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anabasis<\/a><\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nIsa. 6:5 \u2014 \u201cThen said I, Woe is me! for I am undone\u201d; <i>etc<\/i>.<br \/>\nThis is the true <i>Ecphonesis<\/i> of a convicted soul. A confession, not of what he has done, but of what he IS; as to nature, condition, and deserts. Of such an exclamation the result is ever (as recorded in the next verse) \u201cTHEN flew,\u201d <em>etc<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nEzek. 9:8 \u2014\u201cI fell upon my face, and cried, and said, Ah Lord God (Adonai Jehovah)!\u201d <i>etc<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nHos. 13:9 \u2014 \u201cO Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thine help.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nMatt. 15:28 \u2014\u201c Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nMatt. 17:17 \u2014\u201cThen Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation,\u201d <em>etc<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Act&amp;c=7&amp;v=51&amp;t=KJV#51\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Acts 7:51<\/a> is also an <i>Ecphonesis<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nRom. 7:24 \u2014 \u201cO wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from this body of death?\u201d (marg.).<br \/>\nSee <em>Hypallage<\/em>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/figuresofspeechinthebible.net\/?page_id=2084\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ellipsis<\/a><\/em>, and <em>Metonymy<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThis is a true <i>Ecphonesis<\/i>; but, as concluding the whole of the chapter, it is also in that respect a kind of <i>Epiphonema <\/i>(<i>q.v<\/i>.).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThis verse expresses the continuous experience of every true child of God, who understands the conflict between the two natures: \u2014 the old man and the new man: the flesh and the spirit, the old nature and the Divine nature implanted within him by the Holy Spirit.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThis conflict is the one thing of which a merely religious person is destitute. It is the one thing that cannot be imitated by the hypocrite. He never has an abiding sense of inward corruption and of the conflict with it; because he has not the New nature by which alone it is manifested and brought to light. He has no standard within him to detect it, or by which to try it.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Until the truth of the abiding conflict between the two natures is seen no spiritual peace can be enjoyed.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThe <i>fruits<\/i> of the old tree are dealt with in the former portion of this Doctrinal part of the Epistle (Rom. 1:16 to 5:11): and then the <i>old tree itself<\/i> is dealt with in chap. 5:12 to 8:39, and is shown to be (in God&#8217;s sight) as dead, having been crucified with Christ. Thus, the conflict goes on till this body of death (<i>i.e<\/i>., until this dying body), either dies, or is \u201cchanged\u201d at Christ&#8217;s appearing.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then the longing desire will be realised, and faith will be rewarded, as expressed in the words that follow, where the<i> <a href=\"https:\/\/figuresofspeechinthebible.net\/?page_id=2084\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ellipsis<\/a> <\/i>must be supplied:\u2014<br \/>\n\u201cI thank God \u2014\u00a0<em>He will deliver me<\/em><br \/>\n[and reckoning myself even now as already having died with Christ (6:11)\u2014I thank God, that He will deliver me] through Jesus Christ our Lord.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">From \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/download\/figuresofspeechu00bull\/figuresofspeechu00bull.pdf\"><u>Figures Of Speech Used In The Bible<\/u><\/a>\u201d by E.
