Bullinger, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/cu31924029277047\/page\/438\/mode\/2up?view=theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">page\u00a0438<\/a> <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(Epitrochasmos) or, SUMMARISING.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>A running lightly over by way of Summary<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nWhen the enumeration called <a href=\"https:\/\/figuresofspeechinthebible.net\/?page_id=1303\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Synathr\u0153smus<\/i><\/a> is made, not for the sake of amplifying but only for the sake of abbreviating, by summarising, so as to hurry over what is being said (rather than for the sake of dwelling upon it), so as to pass on quickly to another subject, it is then called <i>EPITROCHASMOS<\/i> (<i>Ep&#8217;-i-tro-chas&#8217;-mos<\/i>), from <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03af<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (<i>epi<\/i>), <i>upon<\/i> or <i>over,<\/i> and <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\">\u03c4\u03c1\u03bf\u03c7\u03ac\u03b6\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (<i>trochazein<\/i>), <i>to run along quickly<\/i>, Hence <i>Epitrochasmus <\/i>means <i>a running lightly over<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThe Latins called it PERCURSIO, which means <i>a running through<\/i>. In this connection, it is practically the same as Asyndeton (<i>q.v<\/i>.), where examples may be found.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nSee <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Exo&amp;c=15&amp;v=9&amp;t=KJV#9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ex. 15:9, 10<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<i>Epitrochasmus<\/i> is therefore a figure of <i>Omission<\/i>; in that the conjunction \u201cand\u201d is omitted for the sake of running quickly through the enumeration; and an omission of sense also, in that it abbreviates and summarises.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nOn the other hand it comes under the head of figures involving <i>addition<\/i> in that it at the same time certainly <i>amplifies<\/i> by a copious pouring forth of words.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThus, while there is an actual addition of words, that very addition is for the purpose of avoiding a longer statement.
