\n1 Sam. 2:3 \u2014 “Talk no more so exceeding proudly;
\nlet [not<\/em><\/strong>] arrogancy come out of your mouth.”<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\n1 Kings 2:9 \u2014 “Now therefore hold him not guiltless:
\nfor thou art<\/span><\/em> a wise man, and knowest what thou oughtest to do unto him;
\nbut his hoar head bring thou down to the grave with blood.”<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nThis has been a favorite text with ” those that oppose themselves”
\n(2 Tim. 2:25<\/a>).
\nMisunderstanding the phrase, where David is called “a man after God’s own heart”
\n(as though it referred to David’s character<\/em>, instead of to David’s calling<\/em>, being chosen<\/em> by God and not, as Saul was, by man<\/em>), infidels have pointed to 1 Kings 2:9 to show David’s faithless and bloodthirsty character! But if, as in so many other cases, we repeat the negative from the preceding clause, there is no such difficulty but his hoar head bring thou [not<\/b><\/i>] down to the grave with blood.”<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nTrue, Solomon did put Shimei to death, but this was for quite another reason,
\nand as Solomon said, Shimei’s blood was upon his own head (verse 37).
\nThus the passage is brought into agreement with David’s oath to Shimei, which is repeated in immediate connection with this verse (verse 8 from 2 Sam. 19:23<\/a>).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nPsa. 9:18 \u2014 “For the needy shall not alway be forgotten:
\nthe expectation of the poor shall not<\/em><\/strong> perish for ever.”<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Here the negative is supplied by the A.V. in italics.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nPsa. 38:1 \u2014 “O Lord, rebuke me not in thy wrath:

\nIsa. 38:18 \u2014 “For the grave cannot praise thee, death can [not<\/em><\/strong>] celebrate thee.”<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nIt is open to question whether Gen. 2:6<\/a> is one of these cases.
\nThe three verses 4-6 describe the condition of the earth before the creation of man (verse 7), and before the plants and herbs of the field grew. (Compare verses 4 and 9). Then three negative reasons are given why these did not grow : \u2014
\n(1) “For (\ufb3b\u05d9<\/a>) the Lord God had not (\u05dc\ufb30<\/a>) caused it to rain upon the earth,
\n(2) and (\u05d5) there was a man nowhere (\ufb2e\ufb1d\u05df<\/a>) to till the ground,
\n(3) and (\u05d5) [no<\/b><\/i>] mist went up to water the whole face of the ground.”

Here the words \u201chow oft<\/i><\/strong>\u201d are correctly repeated in the A.V. But why not repeat them also in the following sentences, instead of supplying the word \u201cGod<\/i>,\u201d and translate thus: \u201c[How oft<\/i><\/strong>] He distributeth sorrows in His anger! [How oft<\/i><\/strong>] are they as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away! [How oft<\/i><\/strong>] God layeth up calamity for his (i.e<\/i>., the wicked man\u2019s) children.* He recompenseth him and he shall know it; his eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink the wrath of the Almighty.\u201d
\n*The R.V., missing the proper Ellipsis<\/i>, arbitrarily introduces the words \u201cYe say, God layeth up iniquity for his children,\u201d taking the words as the words of the wicked man instead of the children!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Three prophets use this word of Israel:\u2014Moses uses it of Israel in his glory and pride<\/i>\u00a0(Deut. 1:12<\/a>): Isaiah, of Jerusalem in her\u00a0dissipation<\/i>\u00a0(Isa. 1:21<\/a>): and Jeremiah,
\nof Jerusalem in her\u00a0desolation<\/i>\u00a0(Lam. 1:1<\/a>,\u00a0etc<\/i>.).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Hence, the word very frequently occurs in the book of Lamentations; and its Ellipsis<\/i>\u00a0or omission is frequently to be supplied by repetition. In many cases this is done in the A.V. Note, for example: \u2014<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Lam. 1:1, 2 \u2014\u201cHow doth the city sit solitary, that was<\/i>\u00a0full of people!
\nhow<\/i>\u00a0is she become as a widow!
