Negatives.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The negative is frequently omitted; and is generally supplied in the A.V. and R.V.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nDeut. 33:6 \u2014 &#8220;Let Reuben live, and not die; and let [<i><b>not<\/b><\/i>] his men be few.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n1 Sam. 2:3 \u2014 &#8220;Talk no more so exceeding proudly;<br \/>\nlet [<strong><em>not<\/em><\/strong>] arrogancy come out of your mouth.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n1 Kings 2:9 \u2014 &#8220;Now therefore hold him not guiltless:<br \/>\nfor thou <em><span style=\"color: #808080;\">art<\/span><\/em> a wise man, and knowest what thou oughtest to do unto him;<br \/>\nbut his hoar head bring thou down to the grave with blood.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThis has been a favorite text with &#8221; those that oppose themselves&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=2Ti&amp;c=2&amp;v=25&amp;t=KJV#25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2 Tim. 2:25<\/a>).<br \/>\nMisunderstanding the phrase, where David is called &#8220;a man after God&#8217;s own heart&#8221;<br \/>\n(as though it referred to David&#8217;s <em>character<\/em>, instead of to David&#8217;s <em>calling<\/em>, being <em>chosen<\/em> by God and not, as Saul was, by <em>man<\/em>), infidels have pointed to 1 Kings 2:9 to show David&#8217;s faithless and bloodthirsty character! But if, as in so many other cases, we repeat the negative from the preceding clause, there is no such difficulty but his hoar head bring thou [<i><b>not<\/b><\/i>] down to the grave with blood.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nTrue, Solomon did put Shimei to death, but this was for quite another reason,<br \/>\nand as Solomon said, Shimei&#8217;s blood was upon his own head (verse 37).<br \/>\nThus the passage is brought into agreement with David&#8217;s oath to Shimei, which is repeated in immediate connection with this verse (verse 8 from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=2Sa&amp;c=19&amp;v=23&amp;t=KJV#23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2 Sam. 19:23<\/a>).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nPsa. 9:18 \u2014 &#8220;For the needy shall not alway be forgotten:<br \/>\nthe expectation of the poor shall <strong><em>not<\/em><\/strong> perish for ever.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here the negative is supplied by the A.V. in italics.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nPsa. 38:1 \u2014 &#8220;O Lord, rebuke me not in thy wrath:<br \/>\nand chasten me [<strong><em>not<\/em><\/strong>] in thy hot displeasure.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nPsa. 75:5 \u2014 &#8220;Lift not up your horn on high:<br \/>\nspeak [<strong><em>not <\/em><\/strong><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>with<\/em><\/span>] \u00a0a stiff neck.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here the negative is supplied, as it is in many passages.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nProv. 25:27 \u2014 &#8220;<span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>It is<\/em><\/span> not good to eat much honey;<br \/>\nso <span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>for men<\/em><\/span> to search their own glory [<em><strong>is not<\/strong><\/em>] glory.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nIsa. 38:18 \u2014 &#8220;For the grave cannot praise thee, death can [<strong><em>not<\/em><\/strong>] celebrate thee.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nIt is open to question whether <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Gen&amp;c=2&amp;v=1&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gen. 2:6<\/a> is one of these cases.<br \/>\nThe three verses 4-6 describe the condition of the earth before the creation of man (verse 7), and before the plants and herbs of the field grew. (Compare verses 4 and 9). But why not repeat them also in the following sentences, instead of supplying the word \u201c<i>God<\/i>,\u201d and translate thus: \u201c[<strong><i>How oft<\/i><\/strong>] He distributeth sorrows in His anger! [<strong><i>How oft<\/i><\/strong>] are they as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away! [<strong><i>How oft<\/i><\/strong>] God layeth up calamity for his (<i>i.e<\/i>., the wicked man\u2019s) children.* He recompenseth him and he shall know it; his eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink the wrath of the Almighty.\u201d<br \/>\n*The R.V., missing the proper <i>Ellipsis<\/i>, arbitrarily introduces the words \u201cYe say, God layeth up iniquity for his children,\u201d taking the words as the words of the wicked man instead of the children!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026<span style=\"font-family: SBL Hebrew;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/lang\/lexicon\/Lexicon.cfm?Strongs=H349&amp;t=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d0\u05b5\u05d9\u05da\u05b0<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<i>eykh<\/i>).\u00a0<strong><i>How<\/i><\/strong>?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Psa&amp;c=73&amp;v=19&amp;t=KJV#19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psa. 73:19<\/a> \u2014\u201cHow are they <i>brought<\/i>\u00a0into desolation, as in a moment!<br \/>\nthey are utterly consumed with terrors.\u201d<br \/>\nBut it is better to repeat the word \u201chow\u201d: \u2014 \u201c<strong><i>How<\/i><\/strong>\u00a0are they utterly consumed with terror!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026.<span style=\"font-family: SBL Hebrew;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/lang\/lexicon\/Lexicon.cfm?Strongs=H349&amp;t=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d0\u05b5\u05d9\u05db\u05b8\u05d4<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<i>eykah<\/i>).\u00a0<strong><i>How<\/i><\/strong>!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">An exclamation of pain and grief \u201cHow!\u201d This gives its title to the book of Lamentations in the Hebrew Canon\u2020 \u201c<i>Eykah<\/i>.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2020 The title in the English Version is from the Latin Vulgate. See\u00a0<i>The Names and Order of the Books of the Old Testament<\/i>, by the same author and publisher.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Three prophets use this word of Israel:\u2014Moses uses it of Israel in his glory and <i>pride<\/i>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Deu&amp;c=1&amp;v=12&amp;t=KJV#12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deut. 1:12<\/a>): Isaiah, of Jerusalem in her\u00a0<i>dissipation<\/i>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Isa&amp;c=1&amp;v=21&amp;t=KJV#21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isa. 1:21<\/a>): and Jeremiah,<br \/>\nof Jerusalem in her\u00a0<i>desolation<\/i>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Lam&amp;c=1&amp;v=1&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lam. 1:1<\/a>,\u00a0<i>etc<\/i>.).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hence, the word very frequently occurs in the book of Lamentations; and its <i>Ellipsis<\/i>\u00a0or omission is frequently to be supplied by repetition. In many cases this is done in the A.V.
