In B (6-20) their words and in <i>B<\/i> (28-31) their acts. So that verses 6-20 are not David&#8217;s words at all, but the words of David&#8217;s enemies, the evil which <i>they<\/i> speak against his soul. The evil which <i>they<\/i> speak is contrasted with the \u201cgood\u201d which he prays for himself in the next verse (21).<br \/>\n\u201cLet them curse,\u201d he says in verse 28, \u201cbut bless Thou!\u201d<br \/>\nLet them say \u201clet Satan stand at his right hand\u201d (verse 6); but he is assured (verse 31) that not Satan but Jehovah shall \u201cstand at the right hand of the poor to save him from them that condemn his soul.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nHence in verse 20 David prays, \u201cLet this be the wages* of mine enemies from the Lord, and of them that speak evil against my soul.\u201d So that verse 5 will now read: \u2014<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2026<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">..<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cAnd they have rewarded me evil for good<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2026&#8230;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And hatred for my good will [<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>saying<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">]<\/span>\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span>* <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: SBL Hebrew;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u05e4\u05bc\u05b0\u05e2\u05bb\ufb3c\u05b8\u05d4 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<i>peullah<\/i>),<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0wages, as in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Lev&amp;c=19&amp;t=KJV#s=109013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lev. 19:13<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Isa&amp;c=40&amp;t=KJV#s=719010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isa. 40:10<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Isa&amp;c=49&amp;t=KJV#s=728004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">49:4<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Isa&amp;c=61&amp;t=KJV#s=740008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">61:8<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Isa&amp;c=62&amp;t=KJV#s=741011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">62:11<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Jer&amp;c=22&amp;t=KJV#s=t_conc_767013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jer. 22:13<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThen the Psalm goes on (verses 6-19) to describe the \u201chatred.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nHaving said in verses 2 and 3 that&#8230;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2026<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">..<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful are opened upon me<\/span>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2026&#8230;.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They have spoken against me with a lying tongue<\/span>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2026&#8230;.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">They compassed me about also with words of hatred,<\/span>\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">it is only natural to supply the verb <i>saying<\/i> at the end of verse 5.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nPsa. 144:12 is similar. The structure shows that verses 12 to 15 contain the words of the \u201cstrange children,\u201d and not the words of David.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> \u2026&#8230;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A<sup><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">1<\/span><\/sup> \/ 1-7. David&#8217;s words (Thanksgiving and Prayer).<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2026&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;<\/span>B<sup><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">1<\/span><\/sup> \/ 8. The words of the strange children (vanity and falsehood).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2026<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230; <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A<sup><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">2<\/span><\/sup> \/ 9-11- David&#8217;s words (Thanksgiving and Prayer).<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2026&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">B<sup><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">2<\/span><\/sup> \/ -11-15- The words of the strange children (vanity and falsehood),<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2026<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230; <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A<sup><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">3 <\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\/<\/span> -15. David&#8217;s words. The true conclusion as opposed to the \u201cvanity.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The word <\/span><em style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">say<\/em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> should be put in italics after the word \u201cthat\u201d in verse 12,<br \/>\nand then all the many italics inserted in verses 11-15 can be dispensed with.<br \/>\nIt is clearly suggested in verses 8 and 11. So clearly that there is hardly any necessity<br \/>\nto use it or repeat it in verse 12. The pronoun <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Hebrew;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u05d0\u05b2\ufb2a\u05b6\u05e8 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">(<\/span><i style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">asher<\/i><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">), <\/span><i style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">who<\/i><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">, is clearer than \u201cthat.\u201d Lit., \u201cwho [<\/span><i style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">say<\/i><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">]:\u201d Then the Psalm (B 11-15) goes on to give the vanity and the falsehood as to what constitutes the true happiness of any people:\u2014<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Who<\/span><i style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> say<\/i> <span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: large;\">\u201c <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Our sons <i>are<\/i> as plants grown up in their youth;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8221; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Our daughters <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>are<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> as corner-stones, polished after the similitude of a palace;<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff; font-size: large;\">&#8221; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Our garners are full, affording all manner of store;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8221; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Our sheep bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our streets;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2026<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">..<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8221;\u00a0 <\/span>Our oxen are strong to labour.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8221;\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There is no breaking in nor going out.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u00a0&#8221; <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There is no complaining in our streets.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8221;\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Happy people that are in such a case!<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThen comes, in contrast, David&#8217;s true estimate:<br \/>\n\u201cNO! Happy is that people whose God is Jehovah.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThis is the truth as to real happiness, as is so beautifully declared in Psa. 4:6, 7:\u2014<br \/>\nThere be many that say, Who will show us good?<br \/>\nLord, lift Thou up the light of Thy countenance upon us.<br \/>\nThou hast put gladness in my heart,<br \/>\nMore than in the time that their corn and their wine increased.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nYes, this is the only real \u201cgood.\u201d<br \/>\nThis is the only source of abiding happiness and gladness for any People.<br \/>\nIt is not the increase of corn and wine, but the light of God&#8217;s countenance;<br \/>\nit is not the store which men put in their garners, but it is the \u201cgladness\u201d which God puts in our hearts. The structure of the whole Psalm agrees with this, and indeed necessitates this interpretation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nSo, in Psa. 146:6, happiness is declared to consist in having the God of Jacob<br \/>\nfor our help, and our hope and help in the LORD our God: for there is \u201cno help\u201d<br \/>\nin man (verse 3).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nIsa. 5:9 \u2014\u201cIn mine ears <i>said<\/i> the Lord of hosts.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nIsa. 14:8 \u2014\u201cYea, the fir trees rejoice at thee, <i>and<\/i> the cedars of Lebanon, <i>saying<\/i>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nIsa. 18:2 \u2014\u201cThat sendeth ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of bulrushes upon the waters, <i>saying<\/i>:\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nIsa. 22:13 \u2014\u201cAnd behold joy and gladness, slaying oxen, and killing sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine; [<i>saying<\/i>] Let us eat and drink; for tomorrow we shall die.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Isa. 24:14, 15 \u2014\u201cThey shall cry aloud from the sea, [<i>saying<\/i>], Wherefore\u201d&#8230; <i>etc<\/i>. .<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nIsa. 28:9 \u2014\u201cWhom shall he teach knowledge?\u201d <i>etc<\/i>.<br \/>\nThat is, \u201cWhom [<i>say<\/i> <i>they<\/i>] shall he teach knowledge?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThis verse and the following are the scornful words of \u201cthe scornful men\u201d mentioned in verse 14. They ridicule the words of the prophet, saying, [v13] \u201cfor <i>it is<\/i> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Isa&amp;c=28&amp;t=KJV#s=t_conc_707010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tsav upon tsav, tsav upon tsav<\/a>, &amp;c.,\u201d* not \u201c<i>must be<\/i>\u201d but <span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>it is<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201d.<br \/>\n* <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">See under <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>Paronomasia<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThen, in verse 11, the prophet answers \u201cFor,\u201d or \u201cYea, verily, with stammerings of lip and another (or foreign) tongue will he speak to this people,\u201d and he tells them why \u201cthe word of the Lord was unto them precept upon precept;\u201d <i>viz<\/i>.
