B. Relative Ellipsis:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Where the omitted word must be supplied from the words actually related to it
\nand employed in the context itself.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I. Where the omitted word is supplied from a COGNATE <\/strong>word
\noccurring in the IMMEDIATE CONTEXT.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

1. Where the\u00a0NOUN is suggested by the VERB.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nLev. 4:2 \u2014\u201cIf a soul shall sin through ignorance against any of the commandments
\nof the Lord concerning things<\/i> which ought not to be done.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Here the verb \u201cshall sin\u201d supplies the noun \u201csins,\u201d
\ni.e<\/i>., \u201c concerning sins<\/i> which ought not to be done.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The R.V.<\/a> evades the difficulty by a freer translation.
\nBut the correct supply of the Ellipsis<\/i> enables us to retain the literal translation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nNum. 11:14 \u2014\u201cI am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is<\/i> too heavy for me.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Here the noun is latent in the verb, and is naturally supplied by it thus:\u2014
\n\u201cI am not able to bear the burden of<\/i> all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.\u201d The word \u201cit\u201d does not refer to the People, but to the burden of them.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In verse 17<\/a> it is translated fully<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\n2 Kings 17:14 \u2014\u201cNotwithstanding they would not hear, but hardened their necks,
\nlike to the neck of their fathers,\u201d i.e<\/i>., like to the hardness of<\/i> the necks of their fathers.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nPsa. 13:3 (4) \u2014\u201cLighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the death,\u201d
\ni.e<\/i>., the sleep of<\/i> death.
\n
\n<\/span>
\nPsa. 76:11 \u2014\u201cVow, and pay unto the Lord your God,\u201d

\nPsa. 107:41 \u2014 \u201cAnd maketh him<\/i> families like a flock.\u201d
\nLit., maketh like a flock the families.
\nThe two parallel lines are thus completed by supplying the Ellipsis<\/i>:\u2014
\n\u201cYet setteth he the poor on high from (or, after) affliction.
\nAnd maketh like a flock the families [of the afflicted<\/i>].\u201d
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nHos. 9:4 \u2014\u201cThey shall not offer wine to the Lord,\u201d
\ni.e.<\/i>, wine offerings<\/i>. As in A.V.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nGal. 4:24 \u2014\u201cWhich things are an allegory: for these [two women<\/i>] are the two covenants; the one, indeed, from the mount Sinai, which bringeth forth [children<\/i>]
\ninto bondage, which is Hagar.\u201d The apodosis<\/i> or conclusion is suspended till verse 26. \u201cBut Jerusalem which is above is the free [woman<\/i>], who is the mother of us all.\u201d
\nIn verse 25, it must be noted that the word \u201cthis\u201d is the article \u03c4\u03cc, which is neuter, while \u201cHagar\u201d is feminine. \u03a4\u03cc, therefore, must agree with some neuter word, which must be supplied, such as \u1f44\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1 (onoma<\/i>) name:\u2014\u201cFor this [name<\/i>] Hagar is
\n(or, denotes) Mount Sinai in Arabia.\u201d It is a fact that in Arabia the word Hagar
\n(which means a stone<\/i>) is the name for Mount Sinai.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n1 Chron. 17:18 \u2014 \u201cWhat can David speak<\/i> more to thee for the honour of thy servant?\u201d i.e<\/i>., the honour put upon<\/i> thy servant.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nPsa. 94:10 \u2014 \u201cHe that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct?
\nhe that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he know<\/i>?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Compare verse <\/a>9, where we have similar questions.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nHos. 1:2<\/a> \u2014 \u201cGo, take thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The sense, as we see from verses 3, 6, and 8, must be \u201cand [beget<\/i>] children,\u201d etc.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nMicah 7:3 \u2014\u201cThe prince asketh, and the judge asketh<\/i> for a reward.\u201d
\n
\n<\/span>Here the A.V. supplies the Ellipsis<\/i> by repeating the previous verb.
\nThe R.V. supplies it with the verb \u201cis ready<\/i>\u201d i.e<\/i>., \u201cthe judge is ready<\/i> for a reward.\u201d
\n
\n<\/span>But the verb is latent in the noun (\u201cjudge\u201d) and is to be supplied from it, thus: \u2014
\n\u201cThe prince asketh, and the judge judgeth<\/i> for a reward.\u201d The subject of the former sentence must be supplied from the latter, and then the two lines will read thus: \u2014
\n\u2026…….<\/span>\u201cThe prince asketh for [a reward<\/i>],
\n\u2026……<\/span>And the judge [judgeth<\/i>] for a reward.\u201d
\n
\n<\/span>
\nRom. 12:6-8 \u2014\u201cHaving then gifts differing according to the grace given to us,
\nwhether prophecy, let us prophesy<\/i> according to the proportion of the faith
\n[given<\/i> or dealt to us<\/i>, verse 3<\/a>].\u201d The verbs must also be supplied in the following exhortations:\u2014 \u201cOr ministry, [let us be diligent<\/i>] in the ministry: or he that teacheth, [let him be faithful<\/i>] in teaching; or he who exhorteth, [let him employ himself<\/i>] in exhortation: he who distributeth, [let him distribute<\/i>] with simplicity; he who presideth, [let him preside<\/i>] with care; he that showeth mercy, [let him show it<\/i>] with cheerfulness.\u201d

\n<\/span>In the A.V. and R.V., some are supplied and some are not.
\n
\n<\/span>
\nRom. 13:7 \u2014\u201cRender therefore to all their dues; tribute to whom tribute is due<\/i>,<\/span> etc<\/i>.\u201d
\nHere the verb to be due<\/i> is latent in the noun dues<\/i>.
\n
\n<\/span>
\n1 Cor. 1:26 \u2014\u201cFor ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called<\/i>\u201d
\n
\n<\/span>Here the thought or subject is the \u201ccalling\u201d \u2014 the act of calling<\/i>, i.e<\/i>., not the persons who are called, but the persons who call. The following verses go on to explain the manner in which God calls: viz<\/i>., by choosing the weak and the base to confound the wise and the mighty. So in like manner He had chosen weak instruments like Paul, Apollos and Cephas to call the saints in Corinth, and to produce such wondrous results, in order \u201cthat no flesh should glory in His presence.\u201d
\n
\n<\/span>The Ellipsis<\/i> would in this case be better supplied thus:\u2014
\n\u201cNot many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble call you<\/i>.\u201d
\n
\n<\/span>
\n2 Cor. 5:17 \u2014\u201cTherefore if any man be<\/i> in Christ, he is<\/i> a new creature.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Here the verb substantive is supplied twice, but the verb created<\/i> must be supplied from the noun \u201ccreature\u201d:\u2014 \u201cIf any man be in Christ, [he is created<\/i>] a new creature.\u201d
\nOr else there is only one Ellipsis<\/i>, and the sentence reads on, thus: \u201cIf any man be<\/i> in Christ a new creation, old things have passed away; behold, all things are become new.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nEph. 3:16 \u2014\u201c [Praying<\/i>] that he would grant you,\u201cfrom\u201d bowing my knees\u201d in verse 14.
