They <i>used<\/i> it, however, and this is the all important point.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<\/span>It is a special form of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/figuresofspeechinthebible.net\/?page_id=1384\" target=\"_blank\">Synonymia<\/a>, <\/em>the synonyms being negatives of different kinds heaped together for a special purpose.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<\/span>Negatives are repeated even in English to strengthen and increase the emphasis: just as we say \u201cNo, no,\u201d \u201cNo, I will not.\u201d But in the Greek this is done much more emphatically. Two or more negatives are used to strengthen the assertion.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<\/span>These negatives are <span style=\"font-family: GentiumAlt;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>\u03bf\u1f50<\/i><\/span><\/span> (<i>ou<\/i>) and <span style=\"font-family: GentiumAlt;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>\u03bc\u03ae<\/i><\/span><\/span> (<i>mee<\/i>), which both equally mean <i>no<\/i> or <i>not<\/i>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<\/span> As we are now considering their combined use we need not too closely define their separate use. Otherwise we might enlarge on the fact that the one, <span style=\"font-family: GentiumAlt;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>\u03bf\u1f50<\/i><\/span><\/span> (<i>ou<\/i>), denies absolutely what is a matter of fact, and negatives an affirmation: the other <span style=\"font-family: GentiumAlt;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>\u03bc\u03ae<\/i><\/span><\/span> (<i>mee<\/i>) denies hypothetically what is implied, and negatives a supposition. This difference may be seen in such passages as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=1Co&amp;c=2&amp;v=14&amp;t=KJV#conc\/14\">1 Cor. 2:14<\/a> (<span style=\"font-family: GentiumAlt;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>\u03bf\u1f50<\/i><\/span><\/span>). <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Jhn&amp;c=3&amp;v=18&amp;t=KJV#conc\/18\">John 3:18<\/a>, where we have <span style=\"font-family: GentiumAlt;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>\u03bf\u1f50<\/i><\/span><\/span> in the first sentence, and <span style=\"font-family: GentiumAlt;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>\u03bc\u03ae<\/i><\/span><\/span> (both times) in the second.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G3366&amp;t=KJV\">Matt. 22:29<\/a> \u2014\u201cYe do err, not (<span style=\"font-family: GentiumAlt;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>\u03bc\u03ae,<\/i><\/span><\/span> <i>mee<\/i>) knowing the Scriptures.\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<\/span>Here the <span style=\"font-family: GentiumAlt;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>\u03bc\u03ae<\/i><\/span><\/span> (<i>mee<\/i>) denies <i>subjectively<\/i>, not absolutely, implying that though they did actually know the letter, they did not wish to know their truth.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<\/span>When however they and their compounds, <span style=\"font-family: GentiumAlt;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>o\u1f50\u03b4\u1f73 \u03bc\u03ae<\/i><\/span><\/span> (<i>oude mee<\/i>), and <span style=\"font-family: GentiumAlt;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>o\u1f50\u03b4\u1f73<\/i><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: GentiumAlt;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>\u03bf\u1f50<\/i><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: GentiumAlt;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>\u03bc\u03ae<\/i><\/span><\/span> (<i>oude ou mee<\/i>), are used together, this difference is sunk, and the combination produces a most solemn and emphatic asseveration.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<\/span>Indeed, so strong is it, that whenever man used it the result always belied it.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<\/span>See: \u2014<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=16&amp;v=22&amp;t=KJV#conc\/22\">Matt. 16:22<\/a> where Peter says \u201cThis shall <i>not<\/i> be unto thee.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>But it was<\/i>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Jhn&amp;c=13&amp;v=8&amp;t=KJV#conc\/8\">John 13:8<\/a> Peter says again, \u201cThou shalt <i>never<\/i> wash my feet.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>But Christ did<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=26&amp;v=35&amp;t=KJV#conc\/35\">Matt. 26:35<\/a> where Peter affirms \u201cI will <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>not<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> deny thee.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>But he did<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><a href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Kenneth\/Documents\/John%20%2020:25\">John 20:25<\/a> Thomas says, \u201cExcept I shall see, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>etc<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">., I will <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>not<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> believe.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>But he did<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<\/span>On the other hand, our Lord often used this figure: and, whenever He did so, He always made it good: \u2014<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=5&amp;v=18&amp;t=KJV#conc\/18\">Matt. 5:18<\/a> drink.\u201d And this was perfectly fulfilled (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=11&amp;v=18&amp;t=KJV#conc\/18\" target=\"_blank\">Matt. 11:18<\/a>).<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<\/span>But there is one more use of the figure by Christ, so blessed and so important that we have reserved it to the last: \u2014<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Jhn&amp;c=6&amp;v=37&amp;t=KJV#conc\/37\" target=\"_blank\">John 6:37<\/a> \u2014\u201cAll <span style=\"font-family: GentiumAlt;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> (<em>\u03c0\u1fb6\u03bd \u1f41,<\/em><span style=\"font-family: Georgia;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><em> pan ho<\/em>, <em>everything<\/em>, ) that the Father giveth me shall come to <span style=\"font-family: GentiumAlt;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> (<em> \u1f25\u03be\u03b5\u03b9 <\/em>,<span style=\"font-family: Georgia;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><em> heexei<\/em>, <em>will reach<\/em>) me; and him that Cometh (<em>\u03c4\u03cc\u03bd \u1f10\u03c1\u03c7\u03cc\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/em>, <em>ton erchomenon<\/em>, <em>he who is on his way to<\/em>) to me I will in no wise cast out.\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> .<\/span>The repeated \u201cnot\u201d in the Greek is thus beautifully rendered, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historichymns.com\/Devotionals\/BensonDevotion4.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">George Keith<\/a> effectively sums it up in his hymn on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Heb&amp;c=13&amp;v=5&amp;t=KJV#conc\/5\" target=\"_blank\">Heb. 13:5<\/a><br \/>\n\u201cI will never leave thee nor forsake thee,\u201d where we have the \u03bf\u1f50 \u03bc\u03ae in both clauses: \u2014<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span>\u201cThe soul that on Jesus has fled for repose,<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span> He cannot, He will not desert to his foes;<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span> That soul, though all hell should endeavour to shake,<br \/>\n<span
