Where the omitted word is to be\u00a0 supplied from a <strong>Contrary <\/strong>word.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nGen. 33:10 \u2014\u201cAnd Jacob [<em>refused and<\/em>] said, <em>etc<\/em>.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This word is latent in the contrary words which follow.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nGen. 33:15 \u2014\u201cAnd Esau said, Let me now leave with thee <em>some<\/em> of the folk that<br \/>\n<em>are<\/em> with me. And he [<em>Jacob<\/em>] said, What needeth it? [<em>Thou shalt not leave any<\/em>],\u201d <em>etc<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nGen. 49:4 \u2014\u201cUnstable as water, thou shalt not excel.\u201d<br \/>\nR.V. marg., \u201cBubbling over as water, thou shalt not have the excellency.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The word rendered \u201cunstable\u201d is<span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Hebrew;\"> \ufb44\u05b7\u05d7\u05b7\u05d6 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<em>pachaz<\/em>), <em>to bubble up and overflow<\/em>, <em>to flow down<\/em> like water. (So Sam. and Syr.). The Ellipsis is supplied from the contrary words,<br \/>\n\u201c Flowing down like water [<em>it shall pass away<\/em>] , thou shalt not have the excellency.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This follows on verse 3. \u201cReuben, thou art my firstborn, my might; and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power, with rapidity, like water, [<em>all this shall pass away<\/em>], thou shalt not have the excellency!\u201d<br \/>\nAnd so it came to pass. See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=1Ch&amp;c=5&amp;v=1&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 Chron. 5:1<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nJudges 5:6 \u2014Here, because the <em>Ellipsis<\/em> has not been observed,<br \/>\nliberties have been taken in the translation.<br \/>\nThe Heb. is literally \u201cIn the days of Jael the highways ceased\u201d (as in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Jdg&amp;c=5&amp;v=7&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">verse 7<\/a>).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The A.V. and R.V. both render, \u201cThe highways were unoccupied.\u201d The R.V. tries to preserve the correctness of translation by giving in the margin \u201c<em>the caravans ceased<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But the <em>Ellipsis<\/em> when supplied by the contrary words which follow makes all clear:\u2014\u201cIn the days of Jael, the highways ceased [<em>to be safe<\/em>], and the travellers walked through by-ways.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nPsa. 7:11 \u2014\u201cGod judgeth the righteous, and God is angry <em>with the wicked<\/em> every day.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nPsa. 65:8 \u2014\u201cThou makest the outgoings of the morning and of the evening to rejoice.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This does not mean the outgoings of the evening as well as the morning.<br \/>\nThe contrary word must be supplied, <em>viz<\/em>., \u201c[ <em>the incomings<\/em> or <em>return<\/em>] of the evening.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nPsa. 66:20 \u2014\u201cBlessed <em>be<\/em> God, which hath not turned away my prayer,<br \/>\nnor his mercy from me.\u201d<br \/>\nThis is not \u201cmy prayer from me,\u201d but \u201cmy prayer [<em>from himself<\/em>].\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nPsa. 84:10 \u2014\u201cFor a day in thy courts <em>is<\/em> better than a thousand<br \/>\n[<em>elsewhere<\/em>, or <em>in any other place<\/em>].\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Prov. 19:1 \u2014\u201cBetter <em>is<\/em> the poor that walketh in his integrity, than [<em>the rich, that is<\/em>] perverse in his lips, and is a fool.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here the A.V. has supplied \u201c<em>he that is<\/em>\u201d. It is necessary merely to define the person as <em>rich<\/em> to complete the contrast which is clearly implied.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nProv. 24:17, 18 \u2014\u201cRejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth: lest the Lord see <em>it<\/em>, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him [<em>to thee<\/em>] .\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Without the supply of this <em>Ellipsis<\/em> \u201c<em>to thee<\/em>,\u201d there is no sense in the words.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nProv. 28:16 \u2014\u201cThe prince that lacketh understanding [<em>and<\/em>] also a great oppressor [<em>shall cut off his days<\/em>], <em>but<\/em> he that hateth covetousness, shall prolong <em>his<\/em> days\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nJer. 18:15 \u2014\u201cMy people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity,<br \/>\nand they have caused them to stumble in their ways [<em>so that they forsake<\/em>] the<br \/>\nancient paths,\u201d <em>etc<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nDan. 3:15 \u2014Here the <em>Ellipsis<\/em> is so patent that it is supplied.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cNow if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, ye fall down and worship<br \/>\nthe image which I have made; [<em>well and good<\/em>].\u201d<br \/>\nCompare Luke 13:9.<br \/>\nLuke 13:9 \u2014\u201cAnd if it bear fruit, <em>well<\/em>; and if not, <em>then<\/em>, after that thou shalt cut it down.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here the omitted verb is suggested by the contrary verb that is given.<br \/>\nThus: \u201cIf it bear fruit [<em>thou shalt leave it to stand<\/em>, or <em>shalt not cut it down<\/em>], and if not, after that, thou shalt cut it down.\u201d<br \/>\nSee further under the figure of <a href=\"https:\/\/figuresofspeechinthebible.net\/?page_id=2028\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aposiopesis<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nRom. 6:17 \u2014\u201cBut God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin,<br \/>\nbut ye have obeyed,\u201d <em>etc<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here the word <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u03b4\u03ad <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">( <em>de<\/em>), <em>but<\/em>, in the latter clause implies and points us to the word <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<em>men<\/em>) which is omitted in the former clause. The two go together in a sentence of this character, and the employment of the one reveals the omission of the other. It should be rendered:\u2014\u201cBut God be thanked that [<em>although<\/em>] ye were the servants of sin, yet ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered unto you.\u201d<br \/>\nThis is clearly the sense, for we are not to thank God that we were the servants of sin, but that, <em>though<\/em> we were, we are so no longer.*<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* For the importance of this word<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<em>men<\/em>), <em>although<\/em>, compare 1 Pet. 4:6, where both the A.V. and R.V. ignore it, though it is there in the Greek, thus translating the words:\u2014\u201cFor this cause was the gospel preached to them that are dead also, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.\u201d Surely, it cannot be that the gospel was preached in order that men might be judged! And it is unaccountable why the A.V. and R.V. should both altogether ignore the important word\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<em>men<\/em>), <em>although<\/em>, and leave it untranslated!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They have both created an <em>Ellipsis<\/em> in the English, though there is none in the Greek, which reads<span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> \u1f35\u03bd\u03b1 \u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03b8\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b9 \u03bc\u03ad\u03bd <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<em>hina krithosi men<\/em>), \u201c in order that, though they might be condemned according to the will of men** as to the flesh, yet they might live <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u03b6\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b9 \u03b4\u1f72<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, (<em>z\u014dsi de<\/em>) according to the will of God, as to the spirit.\u201d That is to say, the gospel was preached to those who had since died, not \u201cthat they might be judged\u201d thus, but<br \/>\n\u201cthat THOUGH they might be judged.\u201d<br \/>\n(See a pamphlet on <a words<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> \u201c <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>the will of <\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201d in italics: \u2014 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f70 \u03b8\u03b5\u03cc\u03bd <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(katatheon) according to the will of
