{"id":4754,"date":"2015-03-01T05:32:20","date_gmt":"2015-03-01T09:32:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/figuresofspeechinthebible.net\/?page_id=4754"},"modified":"2023-02-04T03:44:56","modified_gmt":"2023-02-04T07:44:56","slug":"verb-from-preceding-clause","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/figuresofspeechinthebible.net\/?page_id=4754","title":{"rendered":"Verb From Preceding Clause"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">b) Where the omitted VERB is to be REPEATED from a PRECEDING clause.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nGen. 1:30 \u2014 The verb \u201c<i>I have given<\/i>\u201d is correctly repeated in the A.V. from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Gen&amp;c=1&amp;v=29&amp;t=KJV#29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">verse 29<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nGen 4:24 \u2014 \u201cIf Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold, <i>i.e<\/i>., \u201cLamech [<i>shall be avenged<\/i>] seventy and sevenfold.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is spoken with reference to what is stated in the preceding verse, which is very obscure, both in the A.V. and R.V. The A.V. renders it \u201cI have slain\u201d, and margin<br \/>\n\u201c<i>I would slay<\/i>,\u201d while the R.V. renders it \u201cI have slain a man for wounding me,\u201d <i>etc<\/i>., and margin \u201c<i>I will slay<\/i>.\u201d But we must note that these words of Lamech were called forth by the fact that through his son, who was \u201can instructor of every artificer in brass and iron,\u201d Lamech was in possession of superior weapons.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is the earliest form of poetry in the Bible. It is significant that it should be in praise of that violence which was soon to overspread the earth. It is in praise of the new weapons of war which Lamech had now obtained; and so proud is he of his newly-acquired power, that if anyone injured him he declares that he would be so avenged that he would outdo Jehovah in His punishment of Cain.<br \/>\nSee further for the poetical form, under <i>Parallelism<\/i>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nDeut. 1:4 \u2014 \u201cAnd Og, the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Astaroth<br \/>\n[<i>he<\/i> (<i>i.e<\/i>., <i>Moses<\/i>) <i>slew<\/i>] in Edrei.\u201d<br \/>\nSee <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Num&amp;c=21&amp;v=33&amp;t=KJV#33\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Num. 21:33<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Deu&amp;c=3&amp;v=1&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deut. 3:1<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=1Ki&amp;c=20&amp;v=34&amp;t=KJV#34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 Kings 20:34<\/a> \u2014 \u201cThen <i>said Ahab<\/i>.\u201d<br \/>\nThe verb must be repeated from the preceding clause.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nPsa. 1:5 \u2014 \u201cTherefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, and sinners<br \/>\n[<i>shall not stand<\/i>] in the congregation of the righteous.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thus, the blessing of the righteous is, that they do not stand among \u201csinners\u201d (verse 1) now; and the punishment of the ungodly will be that they shall not stand among the righteous in the judgment (verse 5).<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nPsa. 45:3 \u2014 \u201cGird thy sword upon <i>thy<\/i> thigh, O most mighty: [<i>gird thyself<\/i>] with thy glory and thy majesty.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Psa. 126:4 \u2014 \u201cTurn again our captivity, O Lord, as the streams in the south.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There must be a figure employed here, as the grammatical construction is not complete. There is neither subject nor verb in the second clause, as will be apparent if we set them forth, thus: \u2014<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2026&#8230;&#8230;..<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Subject<\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Verb<\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Object.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2026&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Oh Lord<\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;..<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">turn again<\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">our captivity<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span>as<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the streams of the south.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Consequently, it is clear that a figure is employed, and that this figure is <i>Ellipsis.<\/i><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The correct supply of the <i>Ellipsis<\/i> will enable us to give a literal translation of the other words. The comparison employed shows us that the verb required in the second sentence must be repeated from the first.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cTurn again our captivity, oh Lord, as [<i>thou turnest<\/i>] the streams in the south.\u201d<br \/>\nBut this does not yield the whole sense, unless we see the correct and literal meaning of the words.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The word \u201cstreams\u201d is <span style=\"font-family: SBL Hebrew;\">\u05d0\u05b2\u05e4\u05b4\u05d9\u05e7\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<i>apheekeem<\/i>). It is from the root <span style=\"font-family: SBL Hebrew;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"he-IL\">\ufb2f\u05e4\u05b7\u05e7 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<i>aphak<\/i>)<br \/>\nto <i>put a force, constraint or restraint upon <\/i>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Gen&amp;c=43&amp;v=30&amp;t=KJV#conc\/31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gen. 43:31<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Gen&amp;c=45&amp;v=1&amp;t=KJV#conc\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">45:1<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Est&amp;c=5&amp;v=1&amp;t=KJV#conc\/10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Est. 5:19<\/a>).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is the proper name for a narrow and practically inaccessible water-course,<br \/>\neither natural (in a gorge or underground); or artificial (in an aqueduct), in which the water is <i>forced<\/i>, <i>restained<\/i>, and <i>turned about <\/i>by its strong barriers in various directions. The hart hears the rushing of the waters far below in their rocky bed, and she \u201ccrieth out\u201d<br \/>\n(<span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Hebrew;\">\u05e2\u05b8\u05e8\u05b7\u05d2 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<i>arag<\/i>) <i>to cry<\/i>, <i>to long for<\/i>, only here and Joel 1:20) for the waters she cannot reach.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then as to the word rendered \u201csouth\u201d (<span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Hebrew;\">\u05e0\u05b6\u05d2\u05b6\u05d1<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, <i>Negeb<\/i>). This is the proper name of a certain district in Canaan. Thanks be to God,<br \/>\n[<i>He will deliver me<\/i>] through Jesus Christ our Lord.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Rom&amp;c=7&amp;v=24&amp;t=KJV#conc\/25\">*<\/a> Through not noticing the <i>Ellipsis<\/i>, attempts have been made from the earliest times to get sense by altering the text. The T.R. has <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u03b5\u1f50\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u1ff6 \u03c4\u1ff7 \u0398\u03b5\u1ff7 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, with Griesbach, Scholz, and AKLPN. But <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\">\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c2 \u03c4\u1ff7 \u0398\u03b5\u1ff7 <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> Griesbach, Lachmann, Tischendorf, Tregelles, Alford, Westcott and Hort, and R.V. Also the Vatican MS. Others read, \u201cBut thanks be to God,\u201d and others, \u201cIt is the grace of God\u201d (DE), and others, \u201cIt is the grace of the Lord\u201d (FG)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThe deliverance here desired is from the conflict between the old nature and the new, the flesh and the spirit.\u2020<br \/>\n\u2020It is to be noted that \u201cspirit\u201d with a small \u201cs\u201d is one of the names given to the new nature which is implanted in every believer who is born again of the Holy Spirit; and this term \u201cspirit\u201d is to be distinguished from the Person of the Holy Spirit, from the context as well as from the absence of the article. Even in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Rom&amp;c=8&amp;v=1&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rom. 8:1-15<\/a>, the Person of the Holy Spirit is not mentioned. Not until verse 16, \u201cspirit of God\u201d in 8:9 and 14 is divine spirit, <i>i.e<\/i>., \u201cdivine nature\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=2Pe&amp;c=1&amp;v=4&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2 Pet. 1:4<\/a>), \u201cspirit of Christ\u201d (8:9) is Pueuma-Christou, Christ-Spirit, another term for the new nature. So, \u201cspirit of adoption\u201d<br \/>\n(verse 15) is \u201csonship-spirit,\u201d and \u201cthe spirit of Him\u201d (verse 11) is \u201cthe new nature [<i>given by<\/i>] Him who raised up,\u201d <i>&amp;c<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nBut as the flesh is bound up with this \u201cbody of death,\u201d <i>i.e.<\/i>, this dying body, this mortal body, there is no deliverance except either through death and resurrection, or through that \u201cchange\u201d which shall take place at the coming of Christ.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The old heart is not changed or taken away, but a new heart is given, and these two are contrary the one to the other. They remain together, and must remain until God shall \u201cdeliver\u201d us from the burden of this sinful flesh\u2014this mortal body\u2014by a glorious resurrection like unto Christ&#8217;s. Here the subject is the various bodies <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u03c4\u03ac\u03b3\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>tagmata<\/i>) <i>ranks<\/i>, <i>i.e.<\/i>, every man in his own proper band. The same verb is used both of the flesh and of the spirit (<i>i.e<\/i>., the new nature), and the <i>Ellipsis<\/i> of the verb with reference to the latter enables it to be used in its bad sense with regard to the flesh and in a good sense with regard to the spirit:\u2014 \u201cFor the flesh desires <i>that which is<\/i> against the spirit, and the spirit <i>desires that which is<\/i> against the flesh; and these <i>desires<\/i> are contrary to one another, so that ye cannot do the things that ye would,\u201d <i>i.e<\/i>., so that your new nature is hindered ofttimes in doing those good things that ye would, and, thank God, your old nature is also hindered from doing the things which it lusts after.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eph. 1:13 \u2014 \u201cIn whom ye also <i>trusted<\/i>.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here the verb is repeated from verse 12: but it seems rather that another verb should be repeated, from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Eph&amp;c=1&amp;v=11&amp;t=KJV#11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">verse 11<\/a>:<br \/>\n\u201cIn whom ye also were allotted as God&#8217;s <i>own <\/i><i>inheritance<\/i>,\u201d for it is the inheritance which is the subject of the context and not the matter of trusting.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Eph&amp;c=1&amp;t=RSV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">R.V.<\/a> neither sees, nor supplies the <i>Ellipsis<\/i>, treating it as an <i>Anacoluthon<\/i> (<i>q.v<\/i>.).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nEph. 4:22 \u2014 We must repeat from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Eph&amp;c=4&amp;v=22&amp;t=KJV#22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">verse 17<\/a>, \u201c[<i>I say also<\/i>] that ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n1 Thess. 2:11 \u2014 \u201cYe know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father <i>doth<\/i> his children.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here all three verbs are to be understood, <i>i.e<\/i>., \u201cas a father [<i>exhorteth<\/i>, and <i>comforteth<\/i>, and <i>chargeth<\/i>] his children.\u201d<br \/>\n(See under <a href=\"https:\/\/figuresofspeechinthebible.net\/?page_id=1682\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Polysyndeton<\/i><\/a>).<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThe R.V. better preserves the order of the Greek, supplying and treating the <i>Ellipsis<\/i><br \/>\nas absolute. \u201cAs ye know how we <i>dealt with<\/i> each one of you, as a father with his own children, exhorting <i>you<\/i>, and encouraging <i>you<\/i>, and testifying, <i>etc<\/i>.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n1 Thess. 4:14 \u2014 \u201cFor if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">R.V.: \u2014 \u201cEven so them also that are fallen asleep in Jesus will God bring with him.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The two clauses of this verse, as they are thus translated, are so inconsequent that the passage has been a source of difficulty to many, and is practically unintelligible. When this is the case we must ask whether there is a figure employed, and, if so, what it is. Here it can be only the figure <i>Ellipsis<\/i>. But what are the omitted words, which if supplied will cause the passage to yield sense as to teaching, and completeness as to structure?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Before we can answer this question we must institute an enquiry into the usage of the word translated \u201ceven\u201d, as this is the key that will open this lock, besides explaining and throwing light on many other passages. The word \u201ceven\u201d here is <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03af <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<i>kai<\/i>), and <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03af<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (<i>kai<\/i>) is the ordinary conjunction, <i>and<\/i>, which has two distinct senses, (1) <i>and<\/i>, (2) <i>also<\/i> or <i>even<\/i>. It is the latter of these with which we are now concerned. It is a matter of great importance that we should always know what is the word which it emphasizes. In the Greek, this is never in doubt.*<br \/>\n* Nor is it in the Hebrew, as the <span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Hebrew;\">\u05d5 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">is always joined to and forms part of the word with which it is connected.<br \/>\nBut in English literature, including both the A.V. and the R.V., its usage is very inconsistent and defective. In the Greek, <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03af<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, when it means <i>also<\/i>, is always placed immediately BEFORE the word which it emphasizes; while in English usage it may be placed either before or after the word. When we add to this that both in the A.V. and R.V. it is often dissociated altogether from this word, the confusion and ambiguity can be imagined.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The word <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03af<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> is used in the sense of <i>also<\/i> some 636 times in the New Testament\u2020<br \/>\n\u2020 See a pamphlet on the usage of the word \u201cAlso\u201d in the New Testament, by the same author and publisher.<br \/>\nIn 258 of these it is placed (in the A.V.) <i>after<\/i> the word.<br \/>\nIn 275 it is placed <i>before<\/i> the word,<br \/>\nor in connection with another word to which it does not belong.<br \/>\nIn 60 places it is not translated at all.<br \/>\nIn 43 places it is rendered <i>even<\/i>, and placed before the word.<br \/>\nSometimes the A.V. and R.V. agree in this, and sometimes they differ.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now, remembering that the English word \u201calso\u201d must immediately follow the word which it emphasizes, we ask what is that word here (1 Thess. 4:14)? As the Greek stands, it reads, \u201cIf we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them which sleep in Jesus, GOD also will bring with him.\u201d But this yields no intelligible meaning. The hope that is mentioned in the second clause cannot be conditioned on our belief of the fact stated in the former clause.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But notice, before we proceed, that the preposition <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ac<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (<i>dia<\/i>), when it governs the genitive case, as it does here, denotes agency, and is rendered \u201cby\u201d 235 times, \u201cthrough\u201d 87 times, <i>etc<\/i>.; but \u201cin\u201d only 8 times. See its use in the very next chapter<br \/>\n(1 Thess. 5:9), \u201cWe are appointed to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ\u201d<br \/>\n(<span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u03b4\u03b9\u1f70 \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u03af\u03bf\u03c5 \u1f21\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd \u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">); Rom. 7:25, \u201cI thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord\u201d (<span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u03b4\u03b9\u1f70 \u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">); Rom. 5:9, \u201cWe shall be saved from wrath through him\u201d (<span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u03b4\u03b9\u1fbd \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">). No wonder therefore that the R.V., while translating it here \u201cin Jesus,\u201d says in the margin, \u201cGreek, <i>through<\/i>,\u201d and adds the alternative rendering, \u201cWill God through Jesus bring\u201d.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The one thought and subject is Resurrection, as the great and blessed hope of the Lord&#8217;s people. The three clauses are perfectly balanced, as will be seen in the following structure of verse 14: \u2014<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">. &#8230;..<\/span>a \/ If we believe (Belief)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;<\/span>b \/ that Jesus died (Death)<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>c \/ and rose again, (Resurrection)<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;..<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>a <\/i>\/ In like manner [<i>we believe<\/i>] also (Belief)<br \/>\n<i><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span> b <\/i>\/ That them which are asleep (Death)<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span> <i>c <\/i>\/<i> <\/i>will God (by Jesus) bring with Him [<i>from the dead <\/i>] (Resurrection).<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here in a and <i>a<\/i> we have the statement of our <i>belief<\/i>, in b and <i>b<\/i> we have <i>death<\/i><br \/>\n(in b the death of Jesus, and in <i>b<\/i> the death of His saints), while in c and <i>c<\/i> we have <i>resurrection<\/i> (in c the resurrection of Jesus by God, and in c the resurrection of His people by God), but in an explanatory parenthesis it is explained that the Lord Jesus will be the agent, as the context goes on to show (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Jhn&amp;c=5&amp;v=21&amp;t=KJV#21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 5:21<\/a>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Jhn&amp;c=11&amp;v=25&amp;t=KJV#25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">11:25<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Jhn&amp;c=11&amp;v=25&amp;t=KJV#25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">43<\/a>). It was God who brought Jesus from the dead (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Jhn&amp;c=11&amp;v=25&amp;t=KJV#25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heb. 13:20<\/a>). In like manner will He\u2014by Jesus\u2014bring His people from the dead.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hence, we must repeat the verb \u201c<i>we believe<\/i>\u201d from the first clause: \u201cIf we believe that Jesus died and rose again, in like manner [<i>we believe<\/i>] also <i>that<\/i> God will, through Jesus, bring, with Him, them that are fallen asleep.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is the scope of the passage, which immediately goes on to explain how this will be accomplished. We have the same hope presented in the same manner in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Rom&amp;c=6&amp;v=5&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rom. 6:5<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Rom&amp;c=8&amp;v=11&amp;t=KJV#11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">8:11<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=2Co&amp;c=4&amp;v=14&amp;t=KJV#14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2 Cor. 4:14<\/a>, <i>viz.<\/i>, that Resurrection and Advent are the only hope of mourning saints.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Heb. 3:15 \u2014 \u201cWhile it is said, To-day, <i>etc<\/i>.\u201d (So R.V.). The Greek is \u201c <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u1f10\u03bd \u03c4\u1ff7 \u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9 \u03a3\u03ae\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">,\u201d \u201cin (or by) its being said, To-day.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThe simplest solution of this confessedly difficult passage is to repeat the exhortation from verse 13:<br \/>\n\u201c [<i>As ye are exhorted<\/i>] by the saying. To-day, <i>etc<\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nHeb. 4:7 \u2014\u201cAgain [<i>seeing<\/i>] he limiteth,\u201d from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Heb&amp;c=4&amp;v=1&amp;t=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">verse 6<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nHeb. 4:10 \u2014 \u201cFor he that hath entered into his rest, he himself also hath rested from his works, as God [<i>rested<\/i>] from His.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Heb. 7:8 \u2014 \u201cAnd here men that die receive tithes; but there he <i>receiveth them<\/i>, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The reference is clearly to Melchisedec, and it is not testified of him that he now liveth. In Psa. 110:4 it is testified of Christ, \u201cThou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.\u201d That which marked \u201cthe order of Melchisedec\u201d as being different from \u201cthe order of Aaron\u201d was the fact that the days of Aaron&#8217;s order of priesthood began at 30 years of age, and ended at the age of 50 years, whereas the days of Melchisedec&#8217;s had neither such a beginning nor such a limitation: his priesthood had \u201cneither beginning of days nor end of life,\u201d but he remained a priest continually, <i>i.e<\/i>., all his life (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Heb&amp;c=7&amp;v=8&amp;t=KJV#conc\/3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">7:3<\/a>). <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u03b5\u1f30\u03c2 \u03c4\u1f78 \u03b4\u03b9\u03b7\u03bd\u03b5\u03ba\u03ad\u03c2<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (<i>eis to dieenekes<\/i>) means <i>for a continuance,<\/i> the duration being determined by the nature of the context.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In chap. 7:1 it must mean that Melchisedec remained a priest all his life; in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Heb&amp;c=10&amp;v=1&amp;t=KJV#1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chap. 10:1<\/a> it must mean that the sacrifices were continually offered until the end of the Mosaic dispensation; in 10:12 it means that the one sacrifice of Christ is efficacious in perpetuity (or, with Macknight, that Christ offered only one sacrifice during His whole life); while in chap. 10:14 it means that the perfection arising from this sacrifice is limited only by the life of those who are sanctified.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hence, here in 7:8 the <i>Ellipsis<\/i> may be thus supplied:\u2014<br \/>\n\u201cAnd here men that die receive tithes; but there [<i>a man received them<\/i>]<br \/>\nof whom it is testified that he lived [<i>a priest all his life<\/i>.]\u201d *<br \/>\n* The present tense is here (as is often the case) put (by the figure of <i>Enallage<\/i> (<i>q.v<\/i>.), or \u201cExchange\u201d) for the preterite as in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Act&amp;c=9&amp;v=26&amp;t=KJV#26\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acts 9:26<\/a>), not believing that he is a disciple<br \/>\n(<i>i.e<\/i>., was); <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Heb&amp;c=7&amp;v=3&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heb. 7:3<\/a>, he remaineth (<i>i.e<\/i>., remained); <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Mar&amp;c=5&amp;v=15&amp;t=KJV#15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark 5:15<\/a>, they come and see<br \/>\n(<i>i.e<\/i>., came and saw); <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Jhn&amp;c=1&amp;v=29&amp;t=KJV#29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 1:29<\/a>, John seeth (<i>i.e<\/i>., saw), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Jhn&amp;c=1&amp;v=45&amp;t=KJV#45\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 1:45<\/a>, Philip findeth and saith (<i>i.e<\/i>., found and said); <a href=\"13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 9:13<\/a>, they bring him (<i>i.e<\/i>., they brought), <i>etc<\/i>., <i>etc<\/i>.<br \/>\nIn all such cases the figure of <i>Enallage<\/i> marks the action which is thus emphasized.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As Melchisedec was a priest all the days of his life, and his was a mortal life; so Christ was a Priest after the same order; and therefore, as His life is eternal, and has no limit, His priesthood (unlike that of Aaron&#8217;s) must also be without limit, and He is \u201ca priest for ever.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nHeb. 12:25 \u2014 \u201cSee that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here the words are correctly repeated from what precedes.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n2 Pet. 1:19 \u2014 \u201cWe have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise; [<i>taking heed<\/i>, <i>I say<\/i>] in your hearts.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It cannot be that we are to take heed until we are illuminated by God&#8217;s Spirit, or until we are converted! but that we are to take heed to the word of prophecy in our hearts; for it is like a light shining in a dark place. A light is for our eyes to see, and for our feet to use, but the prophetic word is for our hearts to be exercised with. This is contrary to popular theology. This word declares that the world is the \u201cdark place,\u201d and prophecy is the only light we have in it, to which we do well that we take heed. Popular theology says that prophecy is the \u201cdark place,\u201d and we \u201cdo well\u201d to avoid it!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=1Jo&amp;c=3&amp;v=10&amp;t=KJV#10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 John 3:10<\/a> \u2014 \u201cWhosoever doeth not righteousness is not [<i>born<\/i>] of God,\u201d<br \/>\nfrom verse 9.
