Greek, <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u03b1\u1f34\u03bd\u03b9\u03b3\u03bc\u03b1 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<em>ai-nig-ma<\/em>), from <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u03b1\u1f30\u03bd\u03af\u03c3\u03c3\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<em>ainissesthai<\/em>),<br \/>\n<em>to tell a strange tale<\/em>, then <em>to speak darkly<\/em> or <em>in riddles<\/em>.<br \/>\nHence an <em>enigma<\/em> is <em>a dark<\/em> or <em>obscure saying<\/em>, <em>a puzzling statement<\/em> or <em>action<\/em>.<br \/>\nA statement of which the meaning has to be searched for in order to be discovered.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<em>Enigma<\/em> thus differs from <em>Parable<\/em>, in that the latter is generally explained.<br \/>\nWhen a <em>Parable<\/em> is without any explanation, it may be called an <em>Enigma<\/em>,<em><br \/>\ni.e<\/em>., <em>a dark or obscure saying<\/em>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nSee <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Psa&amp;c=78&amp;v=2&amp;t=KJV#conc\/2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psa. 78:2<\/a> quoted in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=13&amp;v=35&amp;t=KJV#conc\/35\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matt. 13:35<\/a>. The \u201cdark saying\u201d of the Old Testament is <span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Hebrew;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u05d7\u05b4\u05d9\u05d3\u05b8\u05d4 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<em>cheedah<\/em>), from<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Hebrew;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> \u05d7\ufb35\u05d3 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<em>chood<\/em>), <em>to tie in a knot<\/em>, <em>to twist<\/em>: <em>a knotty<\/em> or <em>intricate saying<\/em>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nIt is rendered <em>dark saying<\/em> three times (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Psa&amp;c=49&amp;v=4&amp;t=KJV#conc\/4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psa. 49:4<\/a> (5); <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Psa&amp;c=78&amp;v=2&amp;t=KJV#conc\/2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">78:2;<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Pro&amp;c=1&amp;v=6&amp;t=KJV#conc\/6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prov.1:6<\/a>);<br \/>\n<em>dark sentence<\/em>, once (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Dan&amp;c=8&amp;v=23&amp;t=KJV#conc\/23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dan. 8:23<\/a>);<br \/>\n<em>dark speech<\/em>, once (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Num&amp;c=12&amp;v=8&amp;t=KJV#conc\/8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Num. 12:8<\/a>);<br \/>\n<em>hard question<\/em>, twice (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=1Ki&amp;c=10&amp;v=1&amp;t=KJV#conc\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 Kings 10:1<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=2Ch&amp;c=9&amp;v=1&amp;t=KJV#conc\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2 Chron. 9:1<\/a>);<br \/>\n<em>proverb<\/em>, once (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Hab&amp;c=2&amp;v=6&amp;t=KJV#conc\/6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hab. 2:6<\/a>);<br \/>\n<em>riddle<\/em>, nine times (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Jdg&amp;c=14&amp;v=12&amp;t=KJV#12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Judges 14:12<\/a>, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Eze&amp;c=17&amp;v=2&amp;t=KJV#conc\/2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ezek. 17:2<\/a>).<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nWhen the saying is very obscure indeed, it is called HYP\u00c6NIGMA, <em>i.e<\/em>., the same word, with the preposition <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03cc <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<em>hypo<\/em>) prefixed, meaning <em>under<\/em>, <em>i.e<\/em>., a saying <em>deep<\/em> as well as <em>dark<\/em>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nAlso HYP\u00c6NIXIS, from <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03cc <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<em>hypo<\/em>), under, and <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u03b1\u1f30\u03bd\u03b9\u03c3\u03c3\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<em>ainissomai<\/em>), <em>to speak darkly<\/em>.<br \/>\nHence,<em> a speaking beneath<\/em>: <em>i.e<\/em>., having another meaning beneath what is actually said.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nWhen the <em>Enigma<\/em> is connected with the names of persons or places, it is known by the name <em>Polyonymia<\/em>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThere are sayings dark and deep in the Scriptures beside those that are actually so designated.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Gen&amp;c=49&amp;v=10&amp;t=KJV#10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gen. 49:10<\/a> is in the form of <em>Enigma<\/em>.<br \/>\n\u201cThe sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet,<br \/>\nuntil Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.\u201d<br \/>\nSee under <em>Metonymy<\/em>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nJudges 14:14\u2014Samson&#8217;s <em>Enigma<\/em> is well known.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span> \u201cOut of the eater came forth meat,<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span> And out of the strong came forth sweetness.\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThe answer is given in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Jdg&amp;c=14&amp;v=18&amp;t=KJV#18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">verse 18<\/a>, in the form of another question (See <em>Anteisagoge<\/em>):<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span> \u201cWhat is sweeter than honey?<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span> And what is stronger than a lion?\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThis is a saying both \u201cdark\u201d and \u201cdeep\u201d: for there is precious truth hidden in that darkness and those depths, which neither the Philistines nor the natural man can understand or receive.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<em>The Living Word<\/em> (Christ) is stronger than the strong man armed,<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=12&amp;v=29&amp;t=KJV#29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matt. 12:29<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Mar&amp;c=3&amp;v=27&amp;t=KJV#27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark 3:27<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=12&amp;v=21&amp;t=KJV#21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luke 12:21, 22<\/a>). For the Lion means in Hebrew <em>the strong one<\/em>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<em>The Written Word<\/em> (the Scriptures of truth) are sweeter than honey,<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Psa&amp;c=119&amp;v=103&amp;t=KJV#103\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psa. 119:103<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Psa&amp;c=19&amp;v=10&amp;t=KJV#10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">19:10<\/a> (11); <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Jer&amp;c=15&amp;v=16&amp;t=KJV#16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jer. 15:16<\/a>).<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nAll who know this blessed deliverance which the great Deliverer brings, cry out in the words of Psa. 35:10, \u201cLord, who is like unto thee, which deliverest the poor from him that is too strong for him, yea, the poor and needy from him that spoileth him?\u201d<br \/>\n(See <em>Erotesis<\/em> and <em>Prosopop\u0153ia<\/em>).<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThe LAW was a strong Lion (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Gal&amp;c=3&amp;v=10&amp;t=KJV#10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gal. 3:10<\/a>): but the honey is found in verse 13.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nSIN is a strong Lion (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Rom&amp;c=5&amp;v=21&amp;t=KJV#21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rom. 5:21<\/a>): but the honey is found in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Rom&amp;c=6&amp;v=6&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rom. 6:6<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Rom&amp;c=7&amp;v=18&amp;t=KJV#18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">7:18-25<\/a>.<br \/>\nAnd <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=1Co&amp;c=15&amp;v=56&amp;t=KJV#56\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 Cor. 15:56, 57<\/a>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThe WORLD is a strong Lion (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=8&amp;v=14&amp;t=KJV#14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luke 8:14<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Gal&amp;c=5&amp;v=21&amp;t=KJV#21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gal. 5:21<\/a>):<br \/>\nbut the honey is found in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Jhn&amp;c=16&amp;v=33&amp;t=KJV#33\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 16:33<\/a>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nAFFLICTION is a strong Lion (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Job&amp;c=5&amp;v=6&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Job 5:6, 7<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Heb&amp;c=12&amp;v=11&amp;t=KJV#11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heb. 12:11<\/a>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nDEATH is a strong Lion (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Rom&amp;c=5&amp;v=12&amp;t=KJV#12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rom. 5:12<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Heb&amp;c=9&amp;v=27&amp;t=KJV#27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heb. 9:27<\/a>):<br \/>\nbut the honey is found in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=2Ti&amp;c=1&amp;v=10&amp;t=KJV#10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2 Tim. 1:10<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Hos&amp;c=13&amp;v=14&amp;t=KJV#14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hosea 13:14<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=1Co&amp;c=15&amp;v=54&amp;t=KJV#54\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 Cor. 15:54, 55<\/a>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThe answer to these <em>Enigmas<\/em> is found in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Psa&amp;c=73&amp;v=16&amp;t=KJV#16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psa. 73:16, 17<\/a>,<br \/>\n\u201cWhen I thought to know this it was too painful for me;<br \/>\nUntil I went into the sanctuary of God. Then understood I.\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Isa&amp;c=11&amp;v=1&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isa. 11:1<\/a> is a dark saying, and has to be interpreted by what follows.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Isa&amp;c=21&amp;v=11&amp;t=KJV#11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isa. 21:11, 12<\/a>, is another dark saying.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Eze&amp;c=17&amp;v=2&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ezek. 17:2-10<\/a> gives a prophecy concerning the King of Babylon&#8217;s coming to Jerusalem, and leading it into captivity, under the Enigma of two Eagles.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Dan&amp;c=5&amp;v=25&amp;t=KJV#conc\/25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dan. 5:25-28<\/a>\u2014The handwriting on the wall is given in the form of an <em>Enigma<\/em>,<br \/>\nin which the immediate fall of Babylon was announced.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThree words were written, the first twice (by <em>Epizeuxis<\/em>,<em> q.v<\/em>.), for emphasis.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Hebrew;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/>\n\u05de\u05b0\u05e0\u05b5\u05d4\u00a0 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">M&#8217;neh\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 NUMBERED.<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Hebrew;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/>\n\ufb4a\u05b0\u05e7\u05b5\u05dc\u00a0 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">T&#8217;kel\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 WEIGHED.<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Hebrew;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/>\n\ufb44\u05b0\u05e8\u05b5\u05e1\u00a0 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">P&#8217;res\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 DIVIDED.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThese three words are interpreted by Daniel in verses 26-28,<br \/>\nand the fulfillment of them follows in verses 30, 31.<br \/>\nSee under <em>Paronomasia<\/em>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nFrom \u201cFigures Of Speech Used In The Bible\u201d by E.
