Greek, <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bb\u03b7\u03c8\u03b9\u03c2<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, <em>a seizing beforehand<\/em>,<br \/>\n<em>pre-occupation<\/em>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">APANTESIS<\/span> (<em>Ap&#8217;-an-tee<\/em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8216;<\/span>-sis<\/em>), Greek,\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03ac\u03bd\u03c4\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">,<\/span> <em>a meeting<\/em>; hence <em>a meeting of an objection by anticipation<\/em>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Latins called it:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">OCCUPATIO<\/span>,<em> anticipation<\/em>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ANTEOCCUPATIO<\/span>, <em>anticipation beforehand<\/em>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">PR\u00c6MONITIO<\/span>, <em>a defending beforehand<\/em>, <em>obviating objections<\/em>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">All these different names show us the importance of the figure in argumentation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThere is another kind of <i>Prolepsis<\/i>, which has to do only with time. It is distinguished from our present figure in that while it anticipates and speaks of future things as present it really adjourns the application of the words, and is called <span style=\"color: #000000;\">AMPLIATIO<\/span>, or <em>adjournment<\/em>.<br \/>\n(See pages 689 and 914).<br \/>\nThe form of <i>Prolepsis<\/i> which we are considering is an anticipation which has to do with Argumentation; and hence is distinguished from the other by the word <span style=\"color: #000000;\">OCCUPATIO<\/span>: <em>i.e<\/em>., we not only anticipate what is coming, but occupy and deal with it, instead of adjourning or putting it off. <span style=\"color: #333333;\">See Section 4, above.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <i>Prolepsis<\/i>, as relating to Argumentation is of two kinds:<br \/>\n(I.) <i>Tecta<\/i>, or, closed; and (II.) <i>Aperta<\/i>, or, open.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (<strong>I<\/strong>.) <strong><i>Tecta<\/i><\/strong>, or Closed <i>Prolepsis<\/i>, is where the anticipated objection is merely stated or implied, not answered; or answered, but not plainly stated.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<strong>II<\/strong>.) <strong><i>Aperta<\/i><\/strong>, or Open <i>Prolepsis<\/i>, is where the anticipated objection is both answered and stated.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We will consider these in order with the different names which have been given to them.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (I.) <i>Tecta<\/i>:<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">From the Latin <i>tego, to roof or cover<\/i>. The <i>Prolepsis<\/i> is so called when it anticipates the objection, but confines itself merely to stating it. It is called <span style=\"color: #000000;\">HYPOPHORA<\/span>, <em>hy-poph<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">&#8216;<\/span>-o-ra<\/em>, Greek, <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03c6\u03cc\u03c1\u03b1<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, <em>a holding under<\/em>, <em>putting forward<\/em>; then, <em>that which is held forth<\/em>, <em>an objection<\/em>.<br \/>\nSometimes the objection is not stated, but is implied by the answer which is given.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nRom. 9:6\u2014\u201c Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect.<br \/>\nFor they are not all Israel which are of Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThe objection which is met is this:<br \/>\nIf Israel be rejected and cast off for a time (as is going to be shown), then the Word of God has failed, and is ineffectual. No! For they are not all Israel which are of Israel. And there is to be a People taken out from among the Gentiles for His name, as well as a remnant of Israel, according to the election <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">of grace.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nRom. 10:18\u2014\u201c But I say, Have they not heard?<br \/>\n(Anticipating the objection that they have not heard.)<br \/>\nYes verily,\u201d <em>etc<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nRom. 11:1\u2014\u201c I say then. Hath God cast away his people?\u201d<br \/>\n(Anticipating the objection, which many make even until today.)<br \/>\nTo which he replies, \u201cGod forbid,\u201d <em>etc<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nRom. 11:2\u2014 \u201c I say then. Have they stumbled that they should fall [for ever]?\u201d<br \/>\n(Thus anticipating the objection that they had done so, and meeting it in the words that follow), or, \u201c Their falling away was not the object (or purpose) of their stumbling, was it?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nII. Aperta.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nLatin, <em>aperta<\/em>, open. This use of the figure is so called, because not only is the objection anticipated; but it is stated, and the answer also is given. The names for this variation are <span style=\"color: #000000;\">ANTHYPOPHORA<\/span>, <em>an&#8217;-thy- poph &#8216;-o-ra<\/em>. Greek, <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u1f00\u03bd\u03b8\u03c5\u03c0\u03bf\u03c6\u03cc\u03c1\u03b1<\/span><\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, <\/span><em>a reply to an objection<\/em>; from <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u1f00\u03bd\u03c4\u03af <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<em>anti<\/em>), <em>against<\/em>, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03cc<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, <em>to bring or put under<\/em>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Hence, a substitution by stealth. The figure being so called because, by stealth, we take our opponent&#8217;s objection, and substitute it for our own.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nIt was also called &#8211; SCHESIS, <em>schee&#8217;-sis<\/em>. Greek, <span style=\"font-family: Symbol;\">\u03c3\u03c7\u1fc6\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/span>, <em>a checking<\/em>; because, by anticipating the objection, we check the opponent, and keep him from speaking or replying.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nANASCHESIS, <em>an-a&#8217;-sche-sis&#8217;<\/em>. Greek, <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u1f00\u03bd\u03ac\u03c3\u03c7\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, <em>a taking on one&#8217;s self.<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nPROSAPODOTON, <em>pros-a-pod&#8217;-o-ton<\/em>, Greek, <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03b4\u03bf\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, <em>a giving back to<\/em> or <em>besides<\/em>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nHYPOBOLE, <em>hy-pob&#8217;-o-lee,<\/em> Greek, <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03b2\u03bf\u03bb\u03ae<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, <em>a throwing under<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nIsa. 49:14\u2014Zion&#8217;s objection is not merely anticipated in this verse, but is answered in the next. \u201c But Zion said, The Lord hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me.\u201d \u201c <span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: lmedium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.\u201d<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nMatt. 3:9\u2014\u201c Think not to say within yourselves. We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able even of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.\u201d<br \/>\nSee under <i>Parechesis<\/i>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nRom. 3:1-1o\u2014Under the figure <i>Antimetathesis<\/i>, we have shown how the objections of an imaginary Jewish opponent are here stated and met.<br \/>\nSee section 2, above: \u201c As to <i>persons<\/i>.\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nRom. 4:1-3\u2014The objection is met, that Abraham was justified by works\u2014his faith being a work. This is shewn in verse 4 and the following verses to be impossible,<br \/>\nas denying the very first principles of grace.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nRom. 6:1,2\u2014\u201c What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, who have died to sin, live any longer therein?\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: lmedium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That is to say: If those who are \u201cin Christ\u201d died in God&#8217;s purpose when Christ died,<br \/>\nhow can they live in sin?<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nRom. 7:7\u2014\u201c What shall we say then? that the Law is sin? God forbid.<br \/>\nNay, I had not known sin, but by the Law.\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nRom. 9:14, 15\u2014\u201c What shall we say then?
