PLEONASM; or, REDUNDANCY.
<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

When more Words are used than the Grammar requires<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Ple’-o-nasm.<\/i> Greek, \u03c0\u03bb\u03b5\u03bf\u03bd\u03b1\u03c3\u03bc\u03cc\u03c2 (pleonasmos<\/i>): from \u03c0\u03bb\u03b5\u03bf\u03bd\u03ac\u03b6\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd\u00a0(pleonazein<\/i>),
to be more than enough<\/i>. This is from \u03c0\u03bb\u03ad\u03bf\u03bd (pleon<\/i>), or \u03c0\u03bb\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bf\u03bd\u00a0(pleion<\/i>), more<\/i>,
and \u03c0\u03bb\u03ad\u03bf\u03c2 (pleos<\/i>), full<\/i>. We have it in our words complete<\/i>, plen<\/i>itude, replete<\/i>, etc<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


The figure is so called when there appears to be a redundancy of words in a sentence; and the sense is grammatically complete without them. Sometimes the substantive appears to be redundant when its idea is already implied in the adjective; or when two nouns are used where one appears to be sufficient.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


But this redundancy is only apparent. These words are not really superfluous when used by the Holy Spirit, nor are they idle or useless. They are necessary to fill up the sense, which without them would be incomplete and imperfect.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


This figure is used to set forth the subject more fully<\/span> by repeating it in other, sometimes in opposite, terms. What is first expressed affirmatively is sometimes repeated negatively, and vice versa<\/i>. It is also used for the purpose of marking the emphasis; or, for intensifying the feeling; or, for enhancing in some way what has been already said. The term pleonastic<\/i> may therefore be applied to all similar figures
of repetition or addition. But we have endeavoured to classify them according to the object in view in the repetition; whether it be definition, or interpretation, or for mere emphasis by amplification, etc<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


We have reserved the term pleonasm<\/i> for this latter class, where what is said is immediately after put in another or opposite way to make it impossible for the
sense to be missed; and thus to emphasize it.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


The figure may affect words, or sentences.

According to the Hebrew idiom (see under Idiom<\/i>), two nouns are often used together, one of which appears to be redundant. Glassius* gives a list of certain words, which are thus commonly used to enhance and emphasize the force of the other noun. Not as an adjective; for in that case the figure would be Enallage<\/i> instead of Pleonasm<\/i>. Some of these come under the figures Synecdoche<\/i> and Idiom<\/i> (q.v.<\/i>)

The word is always in the plural on account of the various features of the face.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Gen. 1:2 <\/a>\u2014 \u201cAnd darkness was upon the faces of the deep,\u201d
i.e<\/i>. upon the deep<\/i>. But how much more forcible and emphatic the expression
becomes by the pleonasm.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Gen. 11:8<\/a> \u2014 \u201cSo the Lord scattered them abroad from thence
upon the face of all the earth:\u201d i.e.<\/i>, all over the earth.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Gen. 16:8<\/a> \u2014 \u201cI flee from the face<\/a> of my mistress Sarai,\u201d instead of \u201cfrom my mistress.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Gen. 23:3<\/a> \u2014 \u201cAnd Abraham stood up from before his dead.\u201d

Here the A.V. has again omitted the word \u201cface,\u201d but in this case has put it in the margin.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the N.T., though we have Greek words, we have the same Hebrew idiom.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Luke 21:35<\/a> \u2014 \u201cAs a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face<\/a> of the whole earth.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Here the Pleonasm emphasizes the universal character of the events connected with \u201cthe great Tribulation.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Acts 3:19 \u2014 \u201cThat so there may come (R.V.) times of refreshing from the presence<\/a> (face) of the Lord.”<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Acts 5:41<\/a> \u2014 \u201cAnd they departed from the presence of the council.\u201d
Lit., the face of.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Acts 17:26<\/a> \u2014 \u201cFor to dwell on all the face of the earth.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Rev. 12:14<\/a> \u2014 \u201cFrom the face of the serpent,\u201d
i.e.<\/i>, a great way off from the serpent.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This word seems to be redundant when used with the word \u201csword\u201d:
\u201cthe mouth of the sword.\u201d But this use of the Figure is to emphasize the fact that it is not a mere sword, but a sword with its sharp devouring edge, which is thus compared to a mouth.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Gen. 34:26<\/a> \u2014 \u201cAnd they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge
(marg., Heb., mouth) of the sword.\u201d
So also Ex. 17:13<\/a>; Deut. 13:15<\/a>; Ezek. 6:11<\/a>; Amos 7:11<\/a>; Luke 21:24<\/a>; Heb. 11:34<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A sword with two mouths is a sword which devoured exceedingly and slew large numbers;
Judges 3:16<\/a>; Rev. 1:16<\/a>; 2:12<\/a>; Heb. 4:12<\/a>.
Other uses of the word are seen in Gen. 43:7<\/a> \u2014 \u201cWe told him according to the tenor<\/a> (Heb., the mouth) of all these words\u201d: i.e.<\/i>, all those things concerning which they had been interrogated.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Num. 26:56<\/a>\u00a0 \u201cAccording to<\/a> the (mouth of the) lot\u201d:
i.e.<\/i>, according to what the lot shall say or determine.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Prov. 22:6<\/a> \u2014\u201cTrain up a child in the way he should go…\u201d
Heb., in the mouth of his way: i.e.<\/i>, at the very mouth or entrance on life,
so that it may be determined in a direction of justice and honesty, etc<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

i.e.<\/i>, of all men, with emphasis on the \u201call.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Ecc. 3:18<\/a> \u2014 \u201cI said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


R.V.<\/a> : \u201cI said in mine heart. It is because of the sons of men, that God may prove them, etc.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Here, the figure shows that the emphasis is on \u201cmen\u201d in contrast to \u201cbeasts.\u201d
\u201cYet I said in my heart respecting MEN, God hath chosen them to show that they,
even they, are like beasts.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Psa. 36:7<\/a> \u2014 \u201cHow excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings,\u201d
i.e.<\/i>, men in all ages\u2014not merely men, as such, but men in all their successive generations.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


So also in the New Testament we find the same usage:

Mark 3:28<\/a> \u2014 \u201cAll sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men,\u201d
i.e<\/i>., men in all ages, as in Matt. 12:31<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Eph. 3:5<\/a> \u2014 \u201cWhich (i.e<\/i>., the Mystery) in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men:\u201d i.e<\/i>., to any human being. It is according to this Figure or Hebraism that Christ is called \u201cthe Son of Man,\u201d as the man, the representative man, the man who had been long promised as the seed of the woman; the man prophesied. Therefore this title used of Christ usually has reference to that aspect of His work as the appointed Judge of men (Acts 17:31<\/a>). \u201cThe Son of Man\u201d is therefore an emphatic dispensational title of Christ. It means merely \u201cman,\u201d but with emphasis on all that the word means as used of Christ and his dominion in the earth. See Matt. 10:23<\/a>; 16:13<\/a>, 27, 28; Mark 2:28<\/a>. Luke 6:5<\/a>;\u00a0John 3:14<\/a>. etc<\/i>., etc<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Ezekiel is often thus addressed by God (chap, 2:1,11, etc<\/i>.), as \u201cson of man,\u201d
but in his case without the article.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In Psa. 127:4<\/a> (5) we have \u201cchildren of the youth,\u201d i.e.<\/i>., young children.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Joel 3:6<\/a> \u2014 \u201cThe sons of Greece,\u201d
i.e<\/i>., Greeks.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Deut. 1:28<\/a>; 9:2<\/a>\u2014 \u201cSons of the Anakim\u201d: i.e<\/i>., Anakim.
The word in the plural means simply the name of the nation viewed as descended from some progenitor: e.g<\/i>,, \u201cchildren of Israel\u201d: i.e.<\/i>. Israelites, \u201cchildren of Ammon, Moab, etc<\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

. (a<\/i>) This word appears to be redundant in the phrase \u201cthe name of God.\u201d
It means God Himself, and has greater emphasis than if the simple word God were used.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Isa. 30:27<\/a> \u2014 \u201cBehold, the name of the Lord cometh from far\u201d:
i.e<\/i>., Jehovah Himself.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Jer. 44:26<\/a> \u2014 \u201cBehold, I have sworn by my great name, saith the Lord\u201d:
i.e.<\/i>, by myself, by my own majesty, by all that my name implies.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Micah 5:4<\/a> \u2014 \u201cAnd he shall stand and feed in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God\u201d; i.e.<\/i>, in the majesty of Jehovah Himself.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

All these expressions mean, by the figure of Pleonasm<\/i>, to worship and fear Jehovah Himself as opposed to self, and all other gods.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Matt. 6:9<\/a> and Luke 11:2<\/a> \u2014\u201cHallowed be thy name\u201d:
i.e<\/i>. \u201cLet thy holy majesty\u2014thyself alone\u2014be worshipped.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Rev. 15:4<\/a> \u2014 \u201cWho shall not fear Thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name?\u201d:
i.e<\/i>., fear and worship Thee Thyself.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Matt. 1:21<\/a> \u2014 \u201cThou shalt call his name JESUS\u201d:
i.e<\/i>., shall call! Him that holy one Himself.

The word \u201chand\u201d is used in various ways (both idiomatically and by Metonymy<\/i>, q.v<\/i>.) to express the instrument by which a thing is done; and this in order to put the emphasis on the fact that the power did not lie in the instrument, but in him who used it.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Gen. 9:5<\/a> \u2014 It seems superfluous, but it is not. It emphasizes the fact that it is God who requires punishment for shedding man’s blood, and that he will use all and every instrument to accomplish His will.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Ex. 4:13<\/a> \u2014 \u201cAnd he (Moses) said, O Lord (Adonai), send I pray thee by the hand thou wilt send\u201d: i.e<\/i>., by any agency except me!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


1 Sam. 17:37<\/a> \u2014 \u201cThe Lord that delivered me out of the paw (hand<\/a>) of the lion, and out of the paw (hand) of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine\u201d:
i.e<\/i>., the power of the lion, and the bear, and Goliath.

So also 2 Kings 17: 13<\/a>, and many other passages in which Jehovah speaks by the hand<\/i> of his prophets.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


1 Chron. 6:31<\/a> (16) \u2014 \u201cAnd these are they whom David set over the service of song in the house of the Lord.\u201d Lit., \u201cover the hands of song,\u201d i.e<\/i>., over the instruments of song, so as to minister music.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


So 2 Chron. 29:27<\/a>, \u201cthe hands of the instruments\u201d (marg.).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Isa. 64:6<\/a> (5) \u2014 \u201cAnd our iniquities.\u201d
Lit., \u201cthe hand of our iniquities\u201d: i.e.<\/i>, the power of our iniquities.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


To this belongs Psa. 7:3 <\/a>(4), \u201cIf there be any iniquity in my hands.\u201d
Lit., in the hands of me: i.e<\/i>., in me. A kind of Metonymy<\/i> (q.v<\/i>.), or Synecdoche<\/i>,
by which a part of a person is put for the whole.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


In the New Testament we have the same use of the word \u03c7\u03b5\u03af\u03c1 (cheir<\/i>), hand<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Mark 6:2<\/a> \u2014 \u201cThat even such mighty works are wrought by his hands.\u201d
Lit., \u201cby the hands of him\u201d: i.e.<\/i>, by Him.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Luke 1:71<\/a> \u2014 \u201cFrom the hand of all that hate us\u201d:
i.e<\/i>., not merely from our enemies, but from the power of those enemies who hate us and cause us to serve them. So also Acts 5:12<\/a>; 7:25<\/a>, 35<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


In Acts 15:23<\/a>, the A.V. omits \u201cby the hands of them,\u201d and substitutes the word
\u201c letters\u201d in italics. The R.V. says, \u201cThey wrote thus by them\u201d (Gal. 3:9<\/a> and Rev. 19:2<\/a>).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The phrase \u201cin the midst\u201d is used phonastically when it is not to be taken literally as being equidistant from the extremes, or when it only adds emphasis to the sense.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Gen. 45:6<\/a> \u2014 \u201cThese two years hath the famine been in the land.\u201d
Lit., \u201cin the midst of the land\u201d: i.e.,<\/i> all over it. Here it is not translated at all.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Num. 14:13<\/a> \u2014 \u201cThou broughtest up this people in (or by) thy might from among them.\u201d Lit., \u201cout of the midst of them\u201d: out of Egypt.

Psa. 22:22<\/a> (23) \u2014 \u201cIn the midst of the congregation will I praise thee\u201d:

Here, the figure is seen and beautifully translated: not literally, but according to the enhanced sense. The Greek is \u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u1f78\u03c2 \u1f40\u03c1\u03b3\u1fc6\u03c2 (thumos orgees<\/i>), the anger of His wrath, the two words being synonymous. Both refer to the working of the passions of the mind, but <\/span><\/span> \u1f40\u03c1\u03b3\u03ae<\/span><\/span><\/a> (orgee<\/i>) is the heat of the fire, while \u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03cc\u03c2<\/a> (thumos<\/i>) is the bursting forth of the flame, <\/span><\/span>\u1f40\u03c1\u03b3\u03ae (orgee<\/em>), therefore, is the more lasting feeling of anger and wrath, <\/span><\/span>\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u1f78\u03c2 (thumos<\/i>) is the more sudden manifestation of it, so that \u201cfierceness of His wrath\u201d beautifully expresses the figure.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Another kind of Pleonasm is when the sense or whole sentence is repeated in another form, and thus put in another way. This may be done either affirmatively or negatively.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Instead of saying simply in the air, it first says \u201cabove the earth,\u201d and then it is further emphasized by \u201cthe open firmament of heaven,\u201d in order to make the distinction between these and what had been created to be in the waters, and on the earth.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Num. 19:2<\/a> \u2014 \u201cThis is the ordinance of the law which Jehovah hath commanded\u201d:

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>Gen. 40:23<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span> \u2014 \u201cYet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Here the simple statement that the chief butler did not remember Joseph, would have expressed the fact simply and clearly; but in order to emphasize and forcibly mark it, it is repeated negatively:\u2014 \u201cbut forgat him,\u201d as though to remind us that he acted after the manner of man. In this character of man lies the justification of that definition of \u201cgratitude\u201d which the world has given in condemnation of itself: \u2014 that it is \u201ca lively sense of favours to come\u201d!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(verses 15, 16), and this cedar was further overlaid with gold (verse 21).
It is not, therefore, necessary to the description to add verse 18: \u201cThere was no stone seen \u201c: but it was necessary to emphasize the fact, because of the important truth which these stones were afterwards to be used to typify: viz<\/i>., that the \u201cliving stones\u201d
(1 Pet. 2:5<\/a>), who are built up a spiritual house, are as completely covered with the Divine and the glorious righteousness of Christ, in which they appear in the presence of God, \u201cperfect in Christ Jesus,\u201d \u201ccomplete in Him.\u201d Nothing whatever in or of themselves being seen.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
