SYNTHETON; or, COMBINATION.

\nA placing together of two Words by Usage.
\n<\/span><\/span>
\nSyn’-the-ton<\/i>. Greek, \u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b8\u03b5\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd<\/span><\/span>, from \u03c3\u03cd\u03bd<\/span><\/span> (sun<\/i>), together<\/i>, and \u03c4\u03b9\u03b8\u03ad\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>(tithenai), to <\/span><\/span>place<\/i><\/span><\/span>.
\nHence, <\/span><\/span>\u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b8\u03b5\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/span><\/span> (<\/span><\/span>synthetos<\/i><\/span><\/span>) means <\/span><\/span>put together<\/i><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>
\n
\nIt is used of this Figure because two words are by common usage joined by a conjunction for the sake of emphasis, as when we say \u201c time and tide,\u201d \u201cend and aim,\u201d \u201crank and fortune.\u201d
\n
\nIt differs from Synthesis<\/i><\/span><\/span> (<\/span><\/span>q.v.<\/i><\/span><\/span>). And also from <\/span><\/span>Hendiadys<\/i><\/span><\/span>, where only one thing is meant, though two are used (see <\/span><\/span>Hendiadys<\/i><\/span><\/span>).

\nThere are many examples where certain words thus become linked together by usage: e.g<\/i><\/span><\/span>.,
\n\u201crich and poor<\/a>,\u201d \u00a0\u201cold and young<\/a>,\u201d \u00a0\u201cbread and wine<\/a>,\u201d \u00a0\u201cmeat and drink<\/a>,\u201d
\n\u201cbabes and sucklings<\/a>,\u201d \u00a0\u201csins and iniquities<\/a>,\u201d \u00a0\u201cfaith and works<\/a>,\u201d
\n\u201cGod and man<\/a>,\u201d \u00a0\u201cthoughts and deeds<\/a>,\u201d <\/span><\/span>etc<\/i><\/span><\/span>., <\/span><\/span>etc<\/i><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>

\nThe opposite of this Figure is Hendiadys<\/i><\/span><\/span> (<\/span><\/span>q.v.<\/i><\/span><\/span>), by which, though two words are used, only one thing is meant.<\/span><\/span>

\nHere, in Syntheton<\/i><\/span><\/span>, much more is meant than is expressed and embraced by the conjunction of the two words.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
