Greek, <span style=\"font-family: 'SBL Greek';\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03bb\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03cc\u03c2<\/span> <i>a reckoning altogether<\/i>,<br \/>\na bringing of all the premisses; and, the conclusion before the mind.<br \/>\nFrom <span style=\"font-family: 'SBL Greek';\">\u03c3\u03cd\u03bd<\/span> (sun), <i>together<\/i>, and <span style=\"font-family: 'SBL Greek';\">\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03af\u03b6\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9<\/span> (logizesthai), <i>to reckon<\/i>.<br \/>\n(Hence the word <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201c<\/span>logic <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201d<\/span>).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThe regular form of every argument consists of three propositions of which the first two are called <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201c<\/span>premisses<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201d<\/span> (the first being the major, and the latter the minor), while the last, which necessarily follows from them, is called the <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">conclusion<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nBut the term Syllogismus is given to this figure because it is a departure from this rule, the law of logic being legitimately broken for the sake of emphasis.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nIt falls into this division because it is a figure of Rhetoric, in which something is ornitted for the sake of emphasis. It is not the omission of words, as such, as in <i>Ellipsis<\/i>; or of sense, as in <i>Meiosis<\/i> or <i>Tapeinosis<\/i>; but it is a figure in which the premisses are stated, but the conclusion is omitted, and left to the imagination to enhance and heighten the effect; as when we say, <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201c<\/span>it can be better imagined than described<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201d<\/span>. Indeed, so great is the emphasis which is thus acquired that the Latins gave it other names.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThey called it SIGNIFICATIO, because something is signified which is not expressed:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nRATIOCINATIO, or Reasoning, because only the Reasons (and not the conclusion) are stated; or, special importance is given to the reasons, even though the conclusion may be given (See <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Rom&amp;c=3&amp;v=1&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rom. 3<\/a>.)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nAnd it is called- EMPHASIS, because of the emphasis thus given to the argument which is omitted.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=1Sa&amp;c=17&amp;v=4&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 Sam. 17:4-7<\/a> <\/span> \u2014The description of Goliath&#8217;s armour and weapons is given;<br \/>\nand it is left for us to conclude how great his strength must have been.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nIsa. 2:3, 4 \u2014 \u201cOut of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people:<br \/>\nand they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks.<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nHere the facts, or premisses, are stated, but it is left for us to draw the conclusion<br \/>\nas to the marvellous results of this wonder working word, which going out of Zion shall bring them about. That <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201c<\/span>Word of the Lord<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201d<\/span> by which the heavens and earth<br \/>\nwere created shall presently be spoken and bring peace and prosperity to the nations.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nIsa. 4:1 \u2014 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201c<\/span>And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying.<br \/>\nWe will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel; only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThis is the continuation and conclusion of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Isa&amp;c=3&amp;v=1&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chap. 3<\/a>.: in which, from verse 18,<br \/>\nthe punishment of the pride of the <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201c<\/span>daughters of Zion<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201d<\/span> is set forth: but it is left for us to draw the solemn conclusion, How great must be the desolation:\u2014the gates, where the husbands of the daughters of Zion used to assemble, now mourn and are deserted; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Isa&amp;c=3&amp;v=26&amp;t=KJV#26\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isa. 3:26<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Jer&amp;c=14&amp;v=2&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jer. 14:2<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Lam&amp;c=1&amp;v=4&amp;t=KJV#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lam. 1:4<\/a>)\u2014and the women whom many men did woo now come and offer themselves to one man, renouncing the legal claim of the wife<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Exo&amp;c=21&amp;v=10&amp;t=KJV#conc\/10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ex. 21:10<\/a>).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nIsa. 49:20 \u2014 Here the greatness of Zion&#8217;s blessing and prosperity is shown by the statement of the facts in verses <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Isa&amp;c=49&amp;v=20&amp;t=KJV#18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">18-21<\/a>.<br \/>\nIt is left for us to draw this conclusion which is left unstated.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nMatt. 10:30 \u2014 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201c<\/span>But the very hairs of your head are all numbered,<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201d<\/span> <i>i.e<\/i>., therefore how infinite must be the knowledge of our <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201c<\/span>Father<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201d<\/span>! how should I not therefore fear Him!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nMatt. 24:20 \u2014 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201c<\/span>But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day. <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201c<\/span>The conclusion is implied:\u2014for then would your troubles and distress be increased and intensified beyond the power of tongue to tell.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nLuke 7:44 \u2014 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201c<\/span>Thou gavest me no water for my feet:<br \/>\nbut she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201d<\/span> What is implied is\u2014How much greater therefore is her love than yours!<br \/>\nSo verses 45 and 46.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n1 Cor. 11:6 \u2014 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201c<\/span>If the woman be not covered, let her be shorn also.<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span> But she is not shorn, therefore the conclusion is, let her be covered.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n2 Thess. 3:10 \u2014 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201c<\/span>If any would not work, neither should he eat<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">.<br \/>\n<\/span> Here the conclusion is to be supplied:<br \/>\n<i>Every man must eat<\/i>; <i>therefore every man must work<\/i>: for it is not meant that a man&#8217;s food is to be withdrawn from him.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nFrom \u201c<u>Figures Of Speech Used In The Bible<\/u>\u201d by E.
