\u00c6<\/span><\/span>tiologia<\/span><\/span>: \u201cThe rendering a reason for what is said or done\u201d. <\/span><\/span>
\nIt hardly seems like trope or schema to provide a reason for one’s words or deeds, and perhaps it isn’t. However, to get a better understanding of <\/span><\/span>\u00c6<\/span><\/span>tiologia as a figure, it is necessary to examine its other names and their meanings. This provides various perspectives of the figure from the names it has been given.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c6<\/span><\/span>tiologia (page 963<\/a>), or \u201cCause Given\u201d, is derived from the Greek words <\/span><\/span>\u03b1\u1f30\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/span><\/span> (aitia), <\/span><\/span>a cause<\/i><\/span><\/span>, and <\/span><\/span>\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/span><\/span> (logos), <\/span><\/span>a description<\/i><\/span><\/span>.
\nIt is also known by the Greek word <\/span><\/span>\u1f00\u03c0\u1f79\u03b4\u03b5\u03b9\u03be\u03b9\u03c2,<\/span><\/span><\/span> apodeixis<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em> (Strongs G585<\/a>), <\/span><\/span>a making manifest<\/i><\/span><\/span>; <\/span><\/span>a showing forth<\/i><\/span><\/span>; <\/span><\/span>a demonstration<\/i><\/span><\/span> or <\/span><\/span>proof<\/i><\/span><\/span>. This word is used only once in the New Testament (1 Cor. 2:4<\/a>) as <\/span><\/span>demonstration<\/i><\/span><\/span>. Its use by Paul in his writing to the Corinthian church gives us insight into his use of the figure <\/span><\/span>\u00c6<\/span><\/span>tiologia in the epistle to the Romans. Paul wanted to manifest, or make known openly, the holy spirit within him by ministering to the believers as an example of faith. He didn’t want his message to be only words on paper, but he wanted to demonstrate the gospel by his presence.<\/span><\/span>

\nHence, it was very important for them to know Paul’s reason for wanting to visit Rome in person.<\/span><\/span>

Even our faith is by grace, which is \u201cdivine favor\u201d, for without God’s favor we could not believe.

\nThis is an over-emphasis to call attention to the corruptibility of man.
\nGod is spirit and cannot be physically seen. He is holy and eternal, the image of which was to be reflected in man as everlasting and righteousness. But man rebelled against his Creator and no longer is the image God intended him to be.

\nVerse<\/a><\/span><\/span> 25<\/span><\/span><\/a> Heterosis: \u201cfor ever\u201d is \u201cunto the ages\u201d (plural).<\/span><\/span>

\nVerse 26 Antimereia: in the phrase \u201cvile passions\u201d the English word \u201cvile\u201d is an adjective, while \u201cpassions\u201d is a noun. In the Greek it is \u03c0\u03b1\u03b8\u03b7<\/a> \u03b1\u03c4\u03b9\u03bc\u03b9\u03b1\u03c2<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span>, with both words being nouns<\/a>. The Antimereia adds intensity to what is being said.<\/span><\/span><\/span>

\n32 <\/span><\/span>Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them<\/b><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What makes Asyndeton a figure of speech is the absence of any conjunction, specifically between the penultimate and the ultimate words. The next to last word, or penultimate, is <\/span><\/span>implacable, <\/i><\/span><\/span>with <\/span><\/span>unmerciful<\/i><\/span><\/span> being the ultimate. Since a group of characteristics has been ennumerated, grammar requires a conjunction between the last and the second from last. This tells us that the enumeration has ended, and would be presented as \u201c…implacable <\/span><\/span>and<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span> unmerciful\u201d. With the conjunction missing, the enumeration is not necessarily complete and all inclusive. The focus is not on each characteristic of the unrighteousness mentioned, but on what precedes and succeeds these items, which I have displayed in <\/span><\/span>bold<\/b><\/span><\/span> letters.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is sometimes thought that every occurrence of Asyndeton will have a statement following at the end that jumps out like a punch-line, or moral of the story, so to speak. This may or may not be the case, as it is the absence of conjunction that qualifies it, not whether there is a final statement that jumps out at us.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Paronomasia: \u201cThe repetition of words similar in sound, but not necessarily in sense\u201d. (page 307<\/a>)
\nAn adjustment to this definition to help better understand the use of this figure in scripture is: \u201cThe repetition of similar sounds, carried within words that have different meanings\u201d.
\nParonomasia may or may not use words that rhyme.
\nParonomasia may or may not use or contain humor.
\nParonomasia is not what is currently called a pun, playing on words for the purpose of humor.
\nParonomasia is not the use of the same word in the same context, but with different meanings; this is the figure Antanaclasis.
\nParonomasia causes the hearer or reader to stop and think by catching the ear or eye.<\/span><\/span>
