\nVerse 1 Heterosis:
\nDr. Bullinger mentions Dr. Henry Alford’s \u201cGreek Testament Critical Exegetical Commentary<\/u><\/a>\u201d.
\nDr. Alford’s view is that the \u1f14<\/span>\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd, <\/span><\/span><\/span>we have<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span><\/span> (verb: present tense; active voice; indicative mood) should be \u1f14<\/span>\u03c7<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u03c9<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd, <\/span><\/span><\/span>let us have<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span><\/span> (imperative mood), which then would make it like a command.
\nA problem with this is that according to BibleHub.com, <\/span>\u1f14<\/span>\u03c7<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u03c9<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd is only used four times<\/a> in the New Testament, and each time it is present tense; active voice; subjunctive mood. None of the four is Rom. 5:1, and none is in the imperitive mood.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nAccording to BlueLetterBible.org<\/a>, \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span>The subjunctive mood is the mood of possibility and potentiality. The action described may or may not occur, depending upon circumstances.<\/span><\/span><\/span> \u201d
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>(see <\/span><\/span><\/span>Tense<\/a> to the right of <\/span><\/span><\/span>\u1f14\u03c7\u03c9<\/span><\/span><\/span> ech\u014d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em> )<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nWhether Romans 5:1 should read <\/span>\u1f14<\/span>\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd, as it does, or <\/span><\/span><\/span>\u1f14<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u03c7<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u03c9<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd, both fit depending upon perspective, in that what we \u201c have\u201d and what we \u201c manifest\u201d often do not align with each other. We HAVE peace because of the grace of God and the work of Jesus Christ, therefore we must MANIFEST that peace! <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nSynecdoche<\/span>: \u201cpeace\u201d means all spiritual blessings, thereby resulting in peace with God (Eph. 1:3). Synecdoche of the species is like a part for the whole. Peace certainly is a spiritual blessing in and of itself, but we can have it by divine favor due to all that Jesus Christ accomplished for us.
\nVerse 11 Ellipsis (of repetition: preceeding connected words): on page 102<\/a>
\nDr. Bullinger translates as follows…
\n\u201cAnd not only [are we saved from wrath through him]<\/b>, but we also joy in God [as our God]<\/b> through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we now have received the reconciliation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nVerse 2 Antimereia: \u201c…rejoice in hope of the glory<\/u> of God.\u201d \u201c \u03b5\u03bb\u03c0\u03b9\u03b4\u03b9<\/a> \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u03b4\u03bf\u03be\u03b7\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u03c5 \u201d.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Both hope and glory are nouns. Dr. Bullinger inverts their order, using the noun <\/span><\/span><\/span>glory<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span> as an adjective, which then would read… \u201cGod’s <\/span><\/span><\/span>glorious<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span> hope\u201d. <\/span><\/span><\/span>

\nVerse 3 Ellipsis (repetition: of preceding connected words):
\nDr. Bullinger’s translation… \u201cand not only do we [rejoice in hope of the glory of God<\/b>],
\nbut we glory also in tribulations\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nVerses 3, 4 and 5 contain the figure Climax, which is here the figure\u00a0Anadiplosis<\/a>\u00a0repeated. Both Climax and Anadiplosis are figures of\u00a0 grammatical repetition. However, Climax may use the figures Anabasis or Catabasis instead of Anadiplosis, and may then be a figure of Rhetoric rather than grammar.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nWhen a phrase, clause, or sentence begins with the same word that the previous phrase, clause, or sentence ended with, this is the figure Anadiplosis. Anadiplosis ties two ideas to each other, making them grammatically inseparable.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nVerse 6 Tapeinosis: \u1f00<\/span>\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u1ff6<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u03bd<\/span><\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span><\/span> asthen<\/span>\u014d<\/span>n, means <\/span>weak <\/i><\/span>or <\/span>sick<\/i><\/span>. We were dead in sin, not weak or sick. Tapeinosis lessens something in order to INCREASE it.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nVerse 8 Hyperbaton: when the standard or normal word order is intentionally not followed to call special attention to what is said. The Greek text has…

\nVerse 9 Metalepsis: the word \u201cblood\u201d is used, and by association means Jesus’ death; this is the figure Metonymy. From this Metonymy springs another Metonymy, meaning the atonement and everything Christ’s death and resurrection accomplished.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nVerse 10 Synecdoche: death was only a part of the whole (death and resurrection).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nVerse 12 Anacoluthon: a breaking off or away before a thought is completed. On page 723 Dr. Bullinger gives the structure analysis of verses 12-21. Verse 12 is not Anacoluthon, because what seems to drop off is picked up again in verse 18 as follows… \u201cWherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned…Therefore as by the offence of one [judgment came<\/i><\/span>] upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one [ <\/i>the free gift came<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>] upon all men unto justification of life.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
