No sinful man was ever saved by the law, but rather convicted. The law, therefore, makes painfully apparent man’s complete lack of worthiness of God’s mercy in judgement. Nevertheless, God’s love and goodness extend His grace to all through Jesus the Christ.<\/span><\/span><\/span>

\nVerse 7 Metonymy: the effect given for the cause of the effect. \u201cIs the law (the cause) of sin? \u201d
\nor \u201cIs sin the effect of the law? \u201d The answer, of course, is no.
\nDr. Bullinger translates as follows. \u201cIs sin the effect of the law? God forbid. <\/span><\/span>But<\/b><\/span><\/span> yet<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span> I knew not sin except through the law!\u201d

\nThe word <\/span><\/span><\/span>nay<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span> is the word <\/span><\/span><\/span>alla<\/i><\/a>, \u03b1\u03bb\u03bb\u03b1<\/span><\/span><\/span> in the Greek and should be translated as <\/span><\/span><\/span>but<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>

\nThe law reveals sin, much as a flashlight reveals what is within the darkness. The law of God given by way of Moses revealed man’s complete inability to save himself.

Verse 9 Metonymy: \u201cFor I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came<\/u><\/span><\/span>M<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/sup>, sin revived, and I died\u201d. The commandments, of course, were given long before Paul was born.
\nWhat he is refering to is that the law reveals all men’s inescapable need for grace.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In Gal. 3:23<\/a> we read \u201cBut before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.\u201d We know from Hebrews 11<\/a> that faith existed and was demonstrated thoughout the Old Testament. What he is saying here is that a new object of faith came, that is, the good news of Jesus Christ and God’s loving grace toward us.
\n
\nVerse 13 Antanaclasis<\/a>: the word \u201csin\u201d, <\/span><\/span>\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1,<\/span><\/span><\/span> is used more than once, and with more than one meaning.<\/span><\/span>

\nHere \u201cthat which is good\u201d refers to the law.

\nThe first <\/span><\/span>sin<\/u><\/span><\/span> in the verse refers to our old nature which we received from Adam because of the first, or original, sin. <\/span><\/span>It <\/b><\/span><\/span>here refers back to the law of God, and the second use of <\/span><\/span>sin<\/span><\/span> <\/i>refers to the results of the sin nature. The nature we were born with attempts to make that which is good (God’s commandments) look evil.<\/span><\/span>

Verse 23 The one word \u201claw\u201d is used to mean two different things. This figure is called Antanaclasis, or word clashing, and is the use of the same word in the same sentence, but with different meanings. The first and the third use of the word law here refer to sin nature, while the second time it is used it refers to the law of God. (see page 291<\/a>)

\nCatachresis: the word \u201claw\u201d in reference to the old nature of sin is an incongruence. The law of God is holy, and just, and good, but the nature of sin is the contrary.
