It is from <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u03c0\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2<span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> (<em><i>pros<\/i><\/em>), <i>to<\/i> and <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03b4\u03bf\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> (<i>apodosis<\/i>),<i>a giving back<\/i>; (from <span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9 <span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">[<i>apodidomi<\/i>], <i>to give back<\/i>, <i>return<\/i>).<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The figure is so called because after the mention of two or three words or subjects together, there is a <i>return<\/i> to them again, and they are repeated separately for purposes of definition or explanation.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nThe Latins called it REDITIO (from <i>redire<\/i>), which means the same thing, <i>a going<\/i> or <i>returning back<\/i>; or REDDITIO (from <i>reddire<\/i>), <i>a giving back<\/i>. They called it also SEJUGATIO, a <i>disjunction<\/i> or<i> separation, <\/i>from <i>sejungo<\/i>, <i>to unyoke<\/i> (<i>jugum<\/i>, a yoke),<br \/>\nor <i>disjoin<\/i>, because of the separation of the words or subjects which takes place: first being mentioned or yoked together, and then unyoked and mentioned separately.<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nFor the same reason they called it DISJUNCTIO, <i>disjunction.<\/i><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nThe Greeks used a similar descriptive word when they called the figure DIEZEUGMENON (<i>Di-e-zeug&#8217;-me-non<\/i>), <i>from zeugma, a yoke<\/i>, <i>i.e<\/i>., <i>an unyoking<\/i>,<br \/>\nor <i>disjunction<\/i>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nJohn 16:8-11 \u2014\u201cAnd when he is come, he will reprove (marg., <i>convince<\/i>) the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:-<br \/>\n\u201cOf sin, because they believe not on me;<br \/>\n\u201cOf righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;<br \/>\n\u201cOf judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nHere, after the mention of the three words together, \u201csin,\u201d \u201crighteousness,\u201d and \u201cjudgment,\u201d the Lord returns to them again, and repeats them separately, for the purpose of explaining and more particularly defining them. Thus we learn that the mission and work of the Holy Ghost with regard to the world was to <i>bring it in guilty<\/i> (for that is the meaning of the word) concerning these three important facts.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> (1) \u201c<i>Sin<\/i>\u201d is not, as man regards it, some mere yielding to the lusts of the flesh,<br \/>\nbut a refusal to believe God&#8217;s Gospel concerning His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.<br \/>\n<i>That<\/i> is sin in God&#8217;s sight.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> (2) \u201cRighteousness.\u201d Seeing they rejected Christ, and would not believe on Him,<br \/>\nHe was, in righteousness, removed from the earth, and is returned to the Father, until He comes again in&#8230;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> (3) \u201cJudgment.\u201d For the prince of this world has been judged, sentence has been passed upon him, and ere long it will be put into execution.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nRom. 11:22 \u2014\u201cBehold therefore, the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, <b>goodness<\/b>, if thou continue in his goodness; otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Here, the return to the two words is not <i>direct<\/i>, as in John 16:8-11, but in an <i>Epanodos<\/i> (<i>q.v<\/i>.),<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">a.\/Goodness.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">b.\/Severity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">b.\/Severity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">a.\/Goodness.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The statement refers to the Gentiles as such (see verse 13, \u201cI speak to you, Gentiles\u201d), and cannot refer to the Church of God; for, of the members of Christ&#8217;s Body it has been already stated and declared in chapter 8, that there is no condemnation, and no separation.
