FOR THERE IS NO POWER BUT OF GOD!\u201d It is an augmentation at the end of a thought to bring added attention to that thought. Although it is placed at the conclusion of the thought, it does not conclude or exclude that thought from the continuing context. This can be seen in the conjunction \u201ctherefore\u201d in verse 2, which joins it to verse 1. <br><br>Synecdoche: the word \u201csoul\u201d is used meaning the entire individual, not just their soul. I believe this figure is used here to contrast the physical with the spiritual. The soul gives life to the body, and the body without the soul is a corpse. When a person believes that God raised His son Jesus from the dead, and accepts the lordship of Jesus Christ in their life, that person is born again from above. <br>They receive holy spirit, the gift from God. <br>(see <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Act&amp;c=2&amp;v=36&amp;t=KJV#36\" target=\"_blank\">Acts 2:36<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Rom&amp;c=10&amp;v=9&amp;t=KJV#9\" target=\"_blank\">Romans 10:9<\/a>)<br><br>Verse 3 Metonymy: \u201c&#8230;rulers are not a terror&#8230;\u201d meaning a source of terror.<br><br>Apostrophe: see <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/stream\/cu31924029277047#page\/n959\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\">page 904<\/a>.<br><br>Genitive case: \u201c&#8230;not a terror <em>in respect<\/em> to good works\u201d. <br>Compare Bible Hub interlinear of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/interlinear\/romans\/13.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Romans 13:3<\/a> which does not show the Genitive case in verse 3, <br>to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Rom&amp;c=13&amp;v=1&amp;t=KJV#conc\/3\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Letter Bible<\/a> which does. The words <em>owe <\/em>and<em> love <\/em>have similar sounds in Hebrew, therefore Dr. Bullinger mentions the figure, as he understood it. <br><em>Love<\/em> is the word <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=H157&amp;t=KJV\" target=\"_blank\">\u05d0\u05b8\u05d4\u05b7\u05d1<\/a>, <em>&#8216;ahab,<\/em> and owe is <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=H2326&amp;t=KJV\" target=\"_blank\">\u05d7\u05d5\u05b9\u05d1<\/a>, <em>chowb<\/em>. (see also <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=H2325\" target=\"_blank\">\u05d7\u05d5\u05bc\u05d1<\/a> , <em>chuwb<\/em>)<br><br>Verse 10 Tapeinosis: this is the lessening or diminishing of something in order to increase it. <br>Here, the thing diminished is \u201c<em>worketh no ill<\/em>\u201d. Although it is literally true that \u201c<em>Love worketh no ill to his neighbour <\/em>\u201d, the essence of the figure is in the contrast of what isn&#8217;t done with what should be done, that being \u201clove DOES work good\u201d toward its neighbor. <em>Works no ill<\/em> requires no action,<br>whereas <em>working good<\/em> does. <br><br>Metonymy: \u201c<em>love<\/em>\u201d is put for the person(s) performing the action. A person acting by the love of God does good, in addition to not doing ill (evil).<br><br><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Rom&amp;c=13&amp;v=1&amp;t=KJV#conc\/11\" target=\"_blank\">Verse 11<\/a> Ellipsis:<br>\u201cAnd <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G5124&amp;t=KJV\" target=\"_blank\">that<\/a>, knowing the time, that now [<em>it is<\/em>] high time to awake out of sleep: for now [<em>is<\/em>] our salvation nearer than when we believed\u201d.<br><br>\u201cAnd <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G5124&amp;t=KJV\" target=\"_blank\">this&nbsp;<\/a>[<em>I add <\/em>or <em>I exhort<\/em>] knowing the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G2540&amp;t=KJV\" target=\"_blank\">reason<\/a>, that [<em>it is<\/em>] already the hour [<em>for us<\/em>] to awake out of sleep\u201d.<br><br>In light of Dr. Bullinger&#8217;s rendering the word \u201c<em>time<\/em>\u201d or \u201c<em>season<\/em>\u201d as \u201c<em>reason<\/em>\u201d, I will mention a currently popular saying among certain groups that is used during the time leading up to and including the holiday of Christmas. As the saying goes \u201cJesus is the <em>Reason<\/em> for the <em>Season<\/em>\u201d. The reason for Paul&#8217;s strong exhortation is the remaining part of the verse which is \u201c&#8230;for now [<em>is<\/em>] our salvation nearer than when we believed\u201d. I would add that the word \u201c<em>first<\/em>\u201d is implied before the word \u201c<em>believed<\/em>\u201d.<br><br>Verses 11 &amp; 12 Allegory: an Allegory is a continued comparison by representation or implication, <br>i.e., a continued Metaphor, Hypocatastasis, or both. <br>Simile is comparison by <em>resemblance<\/em>; <br>Metaphor is comparison by <em>representation<\/em>; <br>Hypocatastasis is comparison by <em>implication<\/em>.<br>(See <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/stream\/cu31924029277047#page\/n803\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\">page 748<\/a> of \u201c<em>Figures Of Speech Used In The Bible<\/em>\u201d)<br><br>In Metaphor both elements are mentioned, that is, the thing being compared as well the thing it is being compared to. With Hypocatastasis, only one thing is mentioned, that being what the implied thing is being compared to.
