I have heard it said that the Bible was written on an elementary school level, and that its writers were not as well educated as we are today. After we cover 1 Corinthians 13 in the next few weeks, I think we can dismiss such notions as unfounded. But if you find those elementary school students who understand these things, ask them to help me.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nThe chapter is so chock full of conjunctions, it will take us several weeks to fully appreciate the wisdom of God in having it written by the Apostle Paul. In the first 3 verses alone 4 conjunctions are used together 15 times. It is truly remarkable to see language used so precisely, and with such intricacy. The chapter is woven together like a garment of and by God&#8217;s love, which provides a warmth not even a moth can corrupt.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I have presented the conjunctions in <strong>bold<\/strong> type and <u>underlined<\/u>, so as to stand out upon initial observation. The Greek words used, their Strong&#8217;s numbers, and their meanings, can all be found after each verse.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nStanding on its own, verse 1 is not the figure Polysyndeton, but a simple use of conjunctions. &#8220;<strong>Though<\/strong>&#8221; is a word that can be used as a conjunctive adverb, or as a subordinating conjunction. Here it is used as a subordinating conjunction, because, &#8220;but have not charity&#8221; cannot stand on its own without the pronoun &#8220;I&#8221;. Though I speak with the tongues [Metonymy for languages] of men and of angels, but have not charity, I am become [<i>as<\/i>] sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal. The Greek word <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>\u1f10\u1f71\u03bd<\/b><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G1437&amp;t=KJV\">G1437<\/a>]<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> &#8220;<\/span><\/span><b>though<\/b><\/span>&#8221; <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">carries with it an implied &#8220;<b>if <\/b>&#8220;.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nWhen we speak the word of God, and speaking in tongues is speaking the word of God, we need to do so with charity, with the love of God. Without the love of God, what we say may merely seem a bunch of noise to others.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=1Co&amp;c=13&amp;v=1&amp;t=KJV\">1Co 13:1-3 KJV<\/a>]<br \/>\n<strong>1<\/strong> <u><b>Though<\/b><\/u><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">*<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, <u><b>and<\/b><\/u><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">*<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">*<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> have not charity, I am become [<i>as<\/i><\/span>] <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">*[<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>\u1f10\u1f71\u03bd<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><b> <\/b><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G1437&amp;t=KJV\">G1437<\/a> <\/span><b>if <\/b><\/span>] **[<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>\u03b4\u1f73<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> G<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G1161&amp;t=KJV\">1161<\/a> <\/span><b>but<\/b><\/span>]<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nNow we begin the coordinating Polysyndeton with the repetition of the same two conjunctions used in verse 1, <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">&#8220;<\/span><b>and though<\/b><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">&#8220;<\/span><\/span><\/span>,<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> used twice. Within this Polysyndeton, which continues on into verse three, is another Polysyndeton, this time by the use of the coordinating conjunction <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">&#8220;<\/span><b>and<\/b>&#8220;, holding together as one the manifestations of prophesy, word of wisdom, word of knowledge, and faith.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>2<\/strong> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u><b>And<\/b><\/u><\/span><\/span><u>*<\/u> <u><b>though<\/b><\/u>** I have [<i>the gift of <\/i>] prophecy, <u><b>and<\/b><\/u><\/span>* <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">understand all mysteries, <u><b>and<\/b><\/u><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">*<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">all knowledge; <u><b>and<\/b><\/u>* <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u><b>though<\/b><\/u>**<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I have all faith, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u><b>so that<\/b><\/u>***<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I could remove mountains, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u><b>and<\/b><\/u><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> **** have not charity, I am nothing.<br \/>\n*[<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>\u03ba\u03b1\u1f77<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><b> <\/b><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">G<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G2532&amp;t=KJV\">2532<\/a> <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>and<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">] **[<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>\u1f10\u1f71\u03bd<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><b> <\/b><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">G<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G1437&amp;t=KJV\">1437<\/a> <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>even <\/b><b>if <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">] ***[<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>\u1f65\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> G<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G5620&amp;t=KJV\">5620<\/a> <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>insomuch that<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">]<br \/>\n****[<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>\u03b4\u1f73<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> G<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G1161&amp;t=KJV\">1161<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>but<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">]<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nHere we can see the continuation of the subordinating conjunctions &#8220;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>and though<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">&#8220;, or &#8220;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>and even if <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">&#8220;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> in verses 2 and 3, but their repetition in these 3 verses gives equal weight to each of the verses, such as is the pattern of a coordinating conjunction. So a series of subordinating conjunctions is used to coordinate the 3 verses as a whole, with each of the verses<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> having the same weight. If this is a bit too much to digest at one time, just enjoy whatever you may have learned.
