As with the entire index of scriptures containing figures of speech that Dr. Bullinger provides, these are only examples that he references in the book, and in no wise is the index exhaustive. If we therefore suspect that a figure is present in a verse or verses, we should try to understand the verse in light of the description of the figure. We must always first consider scripture to be literal, and taken to mean what is said at face value. Only when there seem to be contradictions present should we consider what is said to be non-literal, or not at face value.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nWhen contradictions seem to be present, we begin a quest to understand with a goal of eliminating contradictions, because the Word of God is without error. God does not lie, and God does not make mistakes. His word is perfect and true, and can be trusted to be without error. Man&#8217;s words and man&#8217;s works are not error free, therefore no single version or translation of the Bible is without error. When God breathed His word to holy men inspiring them to write, we can be sure that what He wanted written was written, within the parameters of each individual human writer&#8217;s ability.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nWhen I read Psalm 50:7-12 KJV &#8211; \u201cHear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against thee: I [<span style=\"color: #666666;\"><i>am<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">] God, [<\/span><span style=\"color: #666666;\"><i>even<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">] thy God.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">8 &#8211; I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices or thy burnt offerings, [<\/span><span style=\"color: #666666;\"><i>to have been<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">] continually before me.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">9 &#8211; I will take no bullock out of thy house, [<\/span><span style=\"color: #666666;\"><i>nor<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">] he goats out of thy folds.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">10 &#8211; For every beast of the forest [<\/span><span style=\"color: #666666;\"><i>is<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">] mine, [<\/span><span style=\"color: #666666;\"><i>and<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">] the cattle upon a thousand hills.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">11 &#8211; I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field [<\/span><span style=\"color: #666666;\"><i>are<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">] mine.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">12 &#8211; If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world [<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>is<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">] mine, and the fulness thereof &#8230;\u201d,<br \/>\nand then I read 2 Corinthians. 4:4 \u201cIn whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.\u201d&#8230;<br \/>\nI see an apparent contradiction.<\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nHow can everything belong to God the Creator, the Father of Jesus Christ and we his brethren, and yet God&#8217;s adversary is called the god of this world? The answer resides in the world, or the meaning of the word, that is.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nIn Psalm 50:12 the word \u201cworld\u201d is in Hebrew <span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Hebrew;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u05ea\u05bc\u05b5\u05d1\u05b5\u05dc<\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">;<\/span><\/span><\/span> <em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">tebel<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> ; <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">t\u0101\u00b7v\u0101l&#8217;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> , and refers to any place that is inhabited or habitable. Basically, anywhere man is, or life itself is, belongs to God the Creator. It does not belong to the god of this world, who is the Devil. Let&#8217;s look at one more example of this word in Psalm 89.<\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nPsa 89:11 &#8211; The heavens [<span style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>are<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">] thine, the earth also [<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>is<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">] thine: [<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>as for<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">] the world [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=H8398&amp;t=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">H8398<\/a>] and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them. [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?strongs=H8398&amp;t=KJV&amp;page=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">H8398 page 2<\/a>]<br \/>\nThat pretty much covers everything.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThe Greek word used for \u201cworld\u201d in both of these verses is <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lexicon.katabiblon.com\/index.php?lemma=\u03bf\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03b7&amp;diacritics=off\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bf\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">, oikoumen<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u00e9<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">(Strong&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/greek\/3625.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">G3625<\/a>), and it carries a similar meaning. Habitable means capable of being inhabited, or sustaining life. Inhabited means that it is or does have life, that is to say, human life, at least in the context we are dealing with here.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nBoth of these words, tebel and oikoumen<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u00e9, are geographic terms, but by implication refer also to the people who live in them. When the word \u201cworld\u201d is used, but it means the people of the world, it is the figure of speech Metonymy.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nLet&#8217;s look at a few more examples of Metonymy used with different words which are related to our study.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nJohn 12:31 &#8211; Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world* be cast out.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">John 14:30 &#8211; Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world* cometh, and hath nothing in me.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">John 16:11 &#8211; Of judgment, because the prince of this world* is judged.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u03ba\u1f79\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">*<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G2889&amp;t=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">G2889<\/a>) refers to the physical world, up to and including all of creation.<br \/>\nBy the exchange of nouns it refers to those who inhabit the physical world.<\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nBut the word for \u201cworld\u201d used in 2 Cor. 4:4 is the word ai<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u014d<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">n, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u03b1\u1f30\u1f7d\u03bd<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G165&amp;t=KJV\">G165<\/a>). Whereas <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: SBL Greek;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">oikoumen<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u00e9 and <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">kosm\u014ds are physical terms, and through exchange mean the people of that physical realm, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">ai<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u014d<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">n deals with time rather than space. A strong clue in identifying the Metonymy here is in the previous verse.<br \/>\n2 Cor. 4:3 \u201cBut if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:&#8230;\u201d. Here the word \u201clost\u201d is the word <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G622&amp;t=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">apollymi<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>, <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u00e4-po&#8217;l-l\u00fc-m\u0113<\/span><\/span><\/span><i> <\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">, ap-ol&#8217;-loo-mee, and is much more forceful than just lost. It means to be destroyed and to perish.<\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThe very day that Adam sinned he and all mankind became subject to death. Not just physical death, but complete non-existence, for God said \u201cthe day that thou eatest thereof, dying thou shalt die\u201d.<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blbclassic.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Gen&amp;c=2&amp;t=KJV#17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gen. 2:17<\/a>)<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nWe see then that \u201c&#8230; if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost&#8230;\u201d. If the good news of the Messiah Joshua (Christ Jesus) having come and paid the price of our redemption be hid, it is hid in them that shall perish. Verse 4 continues the clue with the words \u201cin whom\u201d. \u201cWhom\u201d refers to people, namely the people of the world. Why then is the word aion used in reference to time, rather than the word kosm\u014ds or oikoumene? Because without the resurrection of Jesus Christ and our hope in him, this age is all there is. But by being born-again a second time from above (spiritually) by believing in the resurrection of Jesus, and by accepting the lordship of Christ in our lives, we shall not perish, but have everlasting life.
